Generator runs but no power

I have a 5500 watt briggs and stratton generator. A friend was using it the other day because they lost electricity. He said it fired up and was working fine. They plugged a refrigerator, a deep freeze a tv and one lamp into the generator. Everything was working fine. He went to the store and when he came back the generator was running but no power. I have checked the 20 amp on off switch for the generator outlets and it has continuity. I replaced the brush assembly holder and rectifier because it was cheap and that did not help. Everything I read suggests it might be the voltage regulator but I can't find one on mine. I have looked at the diagram and parts list for my generator and there is no voltage regulator listed. Any ideas. Thanks

I have checked the owners manual and the 20 amp on off circuit switch for the outlets is the only thing I see that might have blown and I checked it and it has continuity.

have you checked the choke? i had a generator that would not output any voltage when the choke was still on

GFCI outlets? are they tripped?

The new, but ten year old Northern Tool Northstar generator that I bought had two very sensitive GFCI receptacles that would trip at the blink of an eye. Didn't even have to have anything plugged into them. I finally changed them out and the new ones work fine.

Somehow lost its residual magnetism and need re-flashing? Start it up and take a corded drill with brushes in the motor, and plug it in. By hand, turn the drill backwards while squeezing the trigger. This will flash the generator.

This happened to the 5500 in my RV's Onan generator. The motor ran fine, but produced no power. I took it to the local Onan/Cummins dealer. He looked it over and told me that it was toast. It would cost more to fix than it was worth. He doesn't sell this type of generator, so he had no interest in telling me that just so he could sell me a new one. He just said, sorry for you, dude....find a good replacement.

That is usually a problem while sitting for an extended time.

The only way to fix yours is find a shop manual. It will ( should ) have the detailed troubleshooting of the critical components. Other than the things you all ready replaced ..........the windings ( burnt / fried) would be a prime suspect and vibration related loose wire connector.
