I'm in the market for a generator in the 7-8kw range. I've noticed that many, if not most, now employ a CO limit sensor which automatically shuts the unit down if it detects high ambient CO levels, or if there's a fault in the sensor. I'd prefer not to have this feature, as I see it as another failure mode, but wondering if anyone has other perspectives. There are still some generators available w/o the sensor. Let's assume the user is not dense enough to use it in the house or other enclosed areas.

Friends family member ... had a whole house generator installed "Professionally" on a concrete pad, NG fed. During the first usage... a window was open on the same side of the house as the generator. (NOT right next to the generator)

The whole family almost died because of CO. Finally their hallway detector went off and alerted them to the danger.

Everyone thinks they are smarter than average and more aware than the people who make mistakes.

I'd rather be safe.

They should have had a CO detector INSIDE every bedroom... not just one at the top of the stairs.
They should have considered the ventilation of the generator housing away from the side of the house with windows.
They should have would have could have almost lost their lives. But they didn't thankfully. Because of a CO monitor.
