What is the best kind of generator to get for backup electricity? I want to make my garage into a mini storage area that can double as a living quarters but I would need to have the generator exhaust come out.

You need a gen that's mounted outside as Norcal said or a portable unit that can be placed outside when running. It's way too dangerous to run a gen inside even if you try to vent the exhaust outside.

Your price point will dictate between these two. Also your intended frequency of use. It may be more cost effective to purchase a portable unit (especially if you plan to move it and use it for other purposes) and build a small shed to house it outside and run your wire.

How much of your normal living space are you trying to replicate? IMHO, to have anything like normal life during extended power outage, a generator plumbed to natural gas or LARGE propane tank will mean you don't have to keep running out for, or storing, large amounts of gasoline. You can get a conversion kit for small gas-powered genny to NG/Propane, if your electrical needs are minimal, or just get something closer to the "whole house" size, that can connect to your existing panel through a transfer switch.

1. What are you trying to power and what is the load?

2. How long do you plan on powering these devices while the electrical service is out?

3. What is more cost effective and available in your area (Gas, NG, Propane, Diesel) city, region, country?

4. Is noise an issue?

5. Are you looking for long term or short term? 1800 rpm vs 3800 rpms will affect noise and durability.

6. How much do you want to spend?

I have owned several types of genset and I have settled on inverter gensets unless you absolutely need large amounts of power. The inverter sets are much quieter, use much less fuel, and make very clean power for today's sensitive electronics that seem to be present in everything from refrigerators to computers.

Cost is higher but they also seem to last much longer than regular gensets.

Can't go wrong with the Honda EU, or Yamaha models. They cost a pretty penny but you're assured a lifetime of use and protection when you need it.
