Wood? Aluminum? insulated or not ---- weight is the deciding factor and you can never have enough HP! I've had a genie on a heavy wooden two car garage door for over 15 years. Only thing I've had to replace related to the door opener has been the interior door button.

I have two single heavy wood doors, one has a genie, the other a craftsman. I think the neighbors 2 miles away can hear the genie when I open the door. C-man is very quiet, both chain drive.

Hello guys I have a 16 by 8 garage door how much hp do I need

Aluminum not insulated

What Size Garage Door Opener Do I Need?

What size is your door?

This question really has many variables.

If you have a Traditional Steel door that is one sided, non-insulated, and without windows it could weigh as little as 150lbs even if it’s 16 feet wide and 7 feet high, much less if it’s smaller.

So the real question would be 2 part.

What size is your door and what type it is?

A typical door for the Northeast will generally be insulated and in most cases be a steel front and back with the insulation sandwiched in between.

The extra layer of steel combined with the insulation makes the door more than twice as heavy as the Traditional Steel.

Even so, if your door is balanced correctly a 1/2 hp motor would be all that’s necessary.

If you can lift your door manually with relative ease than the springs are doing their job and thus the motor is only lifting that relative weight as well.

I didn't realize Genie made chain drive openers. Thought they were known for screw type openers. Mine is extremely quiet.

"Genie or Chamberlain" you ask?

I have a Chamberlain Whisper Drive Opener... my only complaint is the motion activated light keeps coming on for no apparent reason.... 2 o'clock in the morning and I'm "investigating" if somebody is in my garage? :dunno:

I have two screw drive Genie openers, they are old and loud but I do want to know when the doors are opening. I don’t know who builds them but a year ago I installed a chain drive Craftsman opener on a door I use for my lawn mower. It hardly gets used but when I put it up I noticed the pulley seemed like it came from a toy. It broke a couple weeks ago. I didn’t bother getting another one, thought it would just break again so I fixed it.

The Genie’s have been trouble free, I really like having the limit switches on the rail.

I replaced a Genie opener that was only a couple years old last fall because the control board failed. I've been very happy with the Chamberlain I put in its place - quieter, faster, and a better warranty.

As others have mentioned, door type really doesn't matter at all if your springs are setup correctly.

My current GD opener is:

1/2 HP and a door just like yours.

I recently insulated it, no issues with the opener.

You're right, it's a screw drive. I got confused with the other C-man in the shop. Getting old is still better than the alternative.:lol_hitti

This whole horse power thing in openers is advertising hype...........as mentioned...........the door should be balanced and a child should be able to lift the door.

Slightly different but similar to 4-5 HP 110v compressors and 6 HP 21" push lawn mowers.

The springs are designed to lift the door, the opener should be just guiding it if it is adjusted correctly.

I have 2 Genie openers; one is chain and the other is screw-drive.
The screw-drive model is almost 30 years old, never had a problem.

I've been wondering about this as well. I have two wood singles that swing open. I was under the impression that Genie screw drive types were quieter, but who knows.
