I’m old, so I have a couple of the “Sears” wrenches in a toolbox somewhere, probably from the late sixties.

My recollection is that the Companion line was an upgrade from the entry level Sears line, both of which were below Craftsman.

Companion had a better finish than Sears.

One of the Sears wrenches occasionally floats to the top of the drawer when i’m Working on something.

Invariably I have a momentary wtf, until I realize that I have had the wrench well over forty years and it hasn’t failed yet, so I use it, with no ill effect.

Neither the Sears nor the Companion wrenches had the lifetime warranty. I distinctly remember agonizing over the lack of warranty when buying the Sears wrenches for myself, and, later, Companion wrenches for the kitchen drawer or the kid’s first toolbox when they were just beyond toddler stage.

The packaging in the photo shows Chicago as Sears address. They moved to Hoffman Estates, probably in the mid nineties.

I have a set of "craftsman" not the sears you have, combination wrenches marked Japan from the 80's and they seem to be great. I have had them that long

Gary

Another one with a full set of those Japanese Craftsman combination wrenches here, too. Probably the widest range of any set I have, from 1/4 to something like 1 1/8. Got ‘em new in the early 80s.

There was a time when I didn’t like them as well as my made is USA stuff, but with time they’ve grown on me and they’re quite good quality.

I bought that exact set in the early 60s. Busted two of them the same day. No warranty. I learned a valuable lesson about Sears that day.

I have 7 pieces of the drop style box end wrenches but they're the Craftsman stamped ones.

I can't say I seen the others but really just never noticed. :D What I did find interesting with the real Craftsman ones was that they weren't raised panel like all the rest

4 SAE and 3 metric
3/8x7/16
1/2x9/16
5/8x11/16
3/4x7/8
10x11
12x14
13x15

Now this doesn't really matter to OP's question but I have one stubby I came across in my travels and I keep it in tool kit to make adjustments on my mulch layer when in the field.

1/2" x 9/16" no name stamping... just says Drop Forged on one side and Made in USA on the other. No idea who's it is recessed panel design :dunno:

The one on the right is definitely made by Lectrolite in their TruFit pattern. Yo may or may not find the LC initials somewhere on it. LC did not make any 'Craftsman' marked tools to my knowledge.

I've got a 10" pair of Sears Japan slip joint pliers that are as good as any other slip joints.

I bought some Stanley Made Japan slip joint pliers 8" and 6" to replace some really cheap Chinese Taiwan stamped ones I had and was al I could afford at the time when I first got a motorcycle around 79-80. They both looked a like with red dipped plastic handles but wow was the quality so different. Still have them Stanleys among others like Channellock, Diamond and Craftsman and still use them

I bought a pair of Companion side cutters and a pair of Companion pliers at Sears in circa 2004. They have blue handles and a smooth satin finish, and both have held up extremely well in regular use since then. So much so that they've escaped being replaced during my recent Knipex binge.
