Geothermal heat/cooling question.

Hey Friends, I am currently in the process of building my workshop 32x48 l, 18ft ceilings With a 750sqft second floor on one side. I am thinking of turning the second floor into guest quarters. I haven't decided on an hvac system for the second floor or the shop.

i was orinanally going to make the shop 12ft wider, but decided that looked to large in my yard. so I now have a good sized 16ft x 32ft hole beside my shop which needs to be backfilled. but I started wondering since there is already a hole is geothermal a good option?

i don't want to break the bank but now that thw excavation is done is it likely do be a lot more than a regular heat pump? oh and I have access to an excavtor for free if the hole needs to be made deeper...

Hi, you didnt post your location, that makes a big difference in what sort of system will work for you. If you are thinking of having horizontal loops, that hole will be way too small - typical systems require multiple loops that are hundreds of feet long (depending on location).

I just got a quote for Waterfurnace 5 ton geothermal systems. The 5 series was $29k and the 7 series was $37k. Mine is a lake coupled system so no excavation and existing ducts for the most part.

I would not do geothermal for your application but that’s just me.

Thanks for the Replies friends. I'm in southwest BC. I'm on an acre so I have some space and free use of an excavator, but something like $30K for a geothermal system would be way beyond my budget, so i'll shelf this idea.
