I recently was out of town and borrowed a gerber tool from someone. It seemed handy, and I am concidering one. Does anyone know of a store that carries them. I have seen them on the internet, but would like to check it out in person.

Thanks

I have 2 gerbers, one was sent back for repair.
I got a phone call from the factory wanting to know if I wanted/needed any modafcations made at the same time, this service was FREE.
I sent it back to have the blade replaced, I broke it doing something that should have been done with a heaver tool.
At the moment I dont know where I sent it , that was 10 years ago maybe longer, Only tool of that type I had that I thought was better was a S O G

To all the naysayers... I love my Gerbers. I own several of them. I like the locking blades, the locking pliers, the quality, etc. I used to buy nothing but Leatherman, and still have a few. But I prefer the Gerbers. A few years ago, I broke a blade while I was abusing it. I sent it in and the repaired it, and returned it to me with a new, free holster. Total repair cost to me? About three dollars in shipping.

I love Gerber, and will continue to use them. I'd say continue to buy them, but as I see it... I'll never need to buy another pair unless someone steals it or I lose it.

About five years ago, they were on sale at Christmas at Wal-Mart for $25 each. They were a special, seasonal package. I waited until after Christmas and caught them on clearance for... $15 each! Yes $15, I was stoked! I bought about ten of them, gave a few as gifts and then stashed one in each vehicle, my bike, and my atv. I love them.

I have a SOG, it has the blunt pliers tip and I wanted the Needle nose type. It also does not fold and is a little bulky. The one handed opening on the Gerber is cool, and so is the locking tip feature.

I got a gerber multitool back in 1994, great tool for boy scout camping trips, I have no idea where it was made then, but its still going strong today. Same with my gerber parabellum... Love it!

I just stuck a magnet to my gerber, know what IT STICKS!
So whats your point?
I spent 18 years as facality eng in a mach. shop, we used HIGH QUALITY S/S that was magnet .
MY Gerbers stay wet for hours at a time, have them for over 10 years NEVER HAD ANY RUST ON THEM.

gerbers are ok. some of the import ones are cheesy. some are still made in the usa. leatherman and victorinox are far superior. whether a magnet sticks to SS or not has no real merit

Have a Gerber, and a SOG, the SOG is much nicer in my opinion. Leatherman is probably the best value for the money.

There is a huge differance in stainless steel, magnet does not stick to the good stainless steel. The cheap stainless has more iron in it,one reason why it sticks to a magnet

I own probably every quality multitool made over the past 20 years along with just about every Victorinox knife made over the last 35 years. My absolute favorite and the one I carry on me is the Leatherman WAVE. Ever since it came out I have found NOTHING that is it equal for what I do. I am rarely without it.

I have had Gerber, Leatherman and SOG and the one I carry every day is my 15+ year old Gerber mainly because I can take it out with one hand and sling it open and use it. I don't have to take the leatherman out with both hands and fold it open and then have the metal bite into my hand on the grip when I am gripping something hard with the pliers.

what is your definition of good stainless? whether a magnet sticks or not only tells you if a magnet sticks. i have knives by kershaw, spyderco and other quality makers where a magnet will stick to the blade steel. are you telling me they use "cheap stainless"? i better get a refund and tell them they are using cheap stainless. corrosion resistance comes to play in the amount of chromium content the steel has. surface finish(bead blast vs polish) also effects rust resistance.

My biggest gripe with the Geber is those babies will hurt you when the pliers slip off. I wore a few wounds because of it. The one handed pliers is a nice fuction but it still take two hands for any other part. The WAVE is a one hand operation for the knives. They all have their good points and weak points. I just love the needle nose on the wave.

My father had a Gerber at one point. I wasn't a real big fan of it. They don't seem as solid as Leathermans do. I do like Gerber knifes though.

I own a Leatherman Squirt that has been on my keychain for the past 8 years or so. I have snapped the nail file off but that was my fault for trying to pry something with it. I also own a Leatherman Wave. It's nice, just too heavy to carry with me all the time. It gets left in the truck.

Lowes and Gander Mt. sell both Gerber and Leatherman. Som SOG (my favorite) also. IIRC, Menards also caries multiple brands of multi-tools.

I've got two Leatherman tools (one is a Wave), two Gerber, and a SOG.

They're all pretty awesome. You won't go wrong with any of them.

I hate to be the one that tells you but I've had many different Leatherman tools since 1988 and they've all been magnetic. Hmm, does that mean they're ****? I don't think so.

I've got about 6-8 of these Gerbers, and I love them.

Here's my Leatherman I've had for... 15 years, maybe? It's a great tool, but I'm just more comfortable with the locking mechanism of the Gerbers.

Leatherman is made in Portland. The factory is a couple miles from the airport, and they offer tours once or twice a week. If you're in the area it's worth a look.

Seems like it's pretty much a large family business. Tim Leatherman apparently is pretty much retired, but does come to work occasionally still. I think they said his brother runs the place now. They will fix your tool and return it to you for 25 years, I think they'll also sharpen it as well.

A multitool is like a motorcycle helmet, it doesn't do any good if you don't have it with you when you need it. I have several multitools, but the Leatherman Juice S2 is small enough to carry all the time, and although it's not as heavy as the bigger tools, it does what I need until I can get to real tools. I've had one in my pocket for the past 8 years or so.

My SOG says Japan???

A lot of SOG stuff says Japan.

My Pentagon Elite and Pentagon Elite II both are Japanese origin.

I'll have to check the blades of my Pentagon and Mini Pentagon - website says that they're Taiwanese, I could have sworn mine were Japanese.

I don't know for sure where they are made I just know that the Gerber 800 Legend (http://www.gerber-tools.com/Gerber-Multi-Plier-800-Legend-8239.htm) that I got for Christmas about 4 years ago has served me well. My wife made a nice choice. When the spring adjustment nuts came out and if fell to pieces I sent Gerber an E-Mail. They sent me a reply to return it and it was replaced in about two weeks with a brand new replacement. They also apologized for the problems with it via E-Mail.

I'm a pleased customer and with service like that I will continue to purchase their products.
