I've got a Proxxon mini drill from Germany. This one:

It's got a European plug on it with a ground:

My garage is wired for 220. Can I cut the plug and replace it with a US plug with blue to L1 and brown to L2? Like this:

Or do I need to replace the motor?

The wiring routes through a PCB (rectifier?) and the motor is labeled DC230V.

50Hz motors run fine on 60Hz, just 20% faster than the data plate says. 50Hz motors are built heavier because lower frequency motors naturally generate more heat.

The reverse is not true. Running a 60Hz motor on 50Hz will likely overheat it.

The website confirms it is a dc motor and it looks to have a full wave rectifier in it - 4 diodes and 2 caps for ripple filtering to get cleaner dc out of it. You should be ok wiring it up to 240vac @ 60hz.
If you want to hear it from the horses mouth - send an email to them. Go to home page and select news about us and then imprint -here you find email address.

Thanks for the fast responses. I wanted to check before I trashed it. I've got a couple of other tools that I'll double check with Proxxon on.

Been posted numerous times it's a Dc motor, so line frequency is moot- however, a 50 Hz motor will run on 60 hz, but not the other way round. The lower the frequency the more iron required for the magnetics - one reason aircraft went to 400 Hz - much less iron in the transformers.
