My father-in-law got these at the local fleemarket today. I am not sure what they were intended for, but at $2 he had to have them.

I think the markings say GD(possibly CD?) on the top of the hammer. You can clearly read Germany on the bottom.

Those hammers are the type used for fine sheet metal work like larger silver and copper smithing. The hammer with the flat and round face is sometimes referred to as a Polishing hammer. The hammer with the two round faces is an Embossing hammer. I don't recognize the trademark on the hammer. Grobet, Picard, and MOB/Peddinghaus are three of the major brands those hammers are sold under. I believe Grobet just rebrands their hammers, the other two are manufacturers. The trademark doesn't match either.

Two dollars each is a "you ****" price since hammers like that sell new for at least $25 to $40 each. New those hammers would probably have had mirror polished faces.

TooMany: you probably know this, but the tools of the old world thread has as many posts as the vise thread and Monte is the "Tim the tool Man" of Europe knows a ton especially about German made tools. it looks like BC nailed it and if you want more information or confirmation you might post over there too. Monte started that thread about 5 years ago and still follows and posts among the others that know there tools too.

BC: Nice call on the hammers and are you building a solid copper hat for your 5198. by the way congrats again on roping that one and bringing it home. :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Actually I've been starting to play with hammered copper and hopefully sometime soon, silver. I've got lots of these types of hammers laying about and figured I would at least learn how to use them somewhat

Cados = Carl Döhl Söhne
A hammer/hand tool manufacturer based in Wuppertal specialised in framing hammers (Latthammers) and goldsmith hammers. Was taken over in 1969 by Peddinghaus. Nowadays the Cados brand is used for Peddinghaus´ imported lower priced hand tool line.
