Who knew? Not me, "Special Steel" too.
Anyone know the story why Stanley would farm out to (who?) Germany and age of this?

Stanley is a Global tool brand, supplying tools all over the world.
If the local market wants or needs a tool pattern or tools made to a very specific specification, that Stanley doesn’t already manufacture, Stanley seems perfectly willing to commission a local tool manufacturer that already makes tools to that spec. to make tools to that spec. with Stanley branding.
Stanley may also do this to test out whether a subcontractor is up to the task of making tools for the larger Stanley group.

Stanley has been outsourcing almost from their beginning.
If they outsourced enough stuff from any particular supplier, what usually happened is that supplier was bought out and became part of the Stanley empire. (e.g., "Bailey", as well as most every "boxwood rule" maker in New England.)
That's been their business model since Day One, as near as I've been able to tell.

Stupid me. I'm aware outsourcing is the modern way for them but had no clue it's nothing new.
:dunno:I thought they were actually making things in Connecticut.
I wonder which German outfit made this wrench.

^ That would be almost impossible to determine unless you could get aboard your time machine and check the purchasing records of Stanley for the years 1949-1989, when there was a "West Germany".

Outsourcing in the tool business goes all the way back - Frank Mossberg was supplying stamped steel sockets to at least half a dozen other outfits all through the 1920s.
Outsourcing: nothing new under the sun.

Somewhere I have a Stanley history book that talks about their acquisitions over time.

The author is a professional company history writer, so it lacks the depth some of us here would really like to geek out about. Lots of stuff others here know is not present, so finding when they bought out tiny supplier A may not be there.
