Hey guys i have a qunadry for the collective tool chest knowledge. My girlfriend works on campus (we go to Rochester intitute of technology) in the machine shop and has absolutely fallen in love with the tool chest the shop manager who is a good friend of hers has. He has a classic (1956 i believe) gerstner apprentice chest which is just freaking gorgeous. I'm thinking christmas would be a great time to surprise her with one of her own but college students end up choosing rent over a $600 toolchest. However now that gerstner has an overseas line I am eyeing it. Im just curious as to wether anyone has actually seen and held one of these or found a sears that actually has them in stock to look at. I want this to be a special thing not a chintzy knockoff by any means

Thanks a million

That is exactly what it is :(

I would buy a Kennedy steel box before I would ever buy a Chinese “Gerstner” box.

If you go to a major tool show, you can get a made in America Gerstner box a great deal cheaper than “list” price.

You can sometimes find used Gerstner boxes too. Myself, I would put the money in a Kennedy and more tools rather than a nice box that you're gonna feel real bad about the first time it gets scratched.

I'd love to find a good deal on a Gerstner cabinet myself. They wouldn't be any good for greasy wrenches, but for machinist's tools they would be great (heck, I'd like to have one sitting on my coffee table just to look at.)

You could keep an eye on eBay. I just checked over there, and there are a number of vintage Gerstner chests for sale, as well as a number of new International models. I did a search on completed auctions and it looks like the old ones can be had for $200-$400, depending on the size and condition.

The pictures of the International models look good, but I've never seen one in person so who knows.

yea im keeping an eye on ebay problem is the ones on there are kinda rough looking a lot of times and I am not gonna have the time or experience to repair that. Big John I see your point but this isn't gonna be an everyday use kinda thing and its going to be purely for machinists tools. I'm sure there not as nice which is what i expected giving they don't start at $600 i was just hopping someone had seen one in person problem being they are so new

thanks for the help guys
