I would say you should put your toilet on CL since there's always people looking for the old style... But I would bet your county is watching... lol...

The reason for window replacement permits is to see that you follow the codes. Tempered glass closer than 24" from any door and 18" from the floor or lower. 5sq ft of egress in each sleeping room not ore than 44" from the floor. That's just the cliff notes version.

I see people miss these things all the time. You can actually hang a new door in the existing jamb w/o a permit in most jurisdictions. If you change out the frame, they wan't to see the flashing and nailing plus the dead bolt.

Your doing it all wrong.....your supposed to leave the old toilet on the door step of city hall....just wipe the prints off first.

All joking aside.....(sort of).....yes, some of the permit fees are just ways to raise money....but some of them do have a good purpose...

Water is a big issue in CA....there is a significant savings with the newer toilets....

Water heaters? The big concern there is that they are properly strapped and if gas, the flue done correctly. The house next door that sold last year had a new water heater installed....talk about a hack job...inspector had to come back 3 times.....the 'plumber' just couldn't seem to figure it out.....strapping wrong (drilled 15 holes in the stucco trying to find a stud)...used flex for the flue....didn't get the overflow right....didn't install screws in the vent....etc.

It was a perfect example of why some things should be inspected.

I'm already in $20,000 trying to short plat my 10 acres into two fives to sell five to the neighbor (county fees, widen and upgrade the private gravel road, road maintenance agreement, etc.). I've been "granted" preliminary approval. Now I start all over for "Final approval" application !!!! Every time I submit anything I wait three months for a response. Shame is we agreed on a purchase price two years ago when the process started, now the market has come back up.:willy_nil

You can always fail the approval. If the neighbor is anxious enough, he'll put some more money in. But, we're going OT.

I see mostly rural folks being anti permit. In the nicer parts of the city things need to be done correctly. That's one of the things that keeps the nicer places nice. That would include a new layer of shingles over old. You are allowed 2 roof coverings, not 3. There's good reason for that.

When I lived in a small town in Taxachusetts I wanted to replace my dishwasher that leaked when one of the 4 modes was used. New dishwasher- $250, Electrical permit- $75. Plumbing permit- $85, required licensed electrician- $150, required licensed plumber- $130. I sold the house 4 years later with the same leaky dishwasher, I just didn't use the mode that leaked.
Presently where I am in Maine, if it connects to septic or well, it needs a $10 permit, other than that... nothing.
