I have been slowly remodeling my house that was built in the 50s. The past two years i have just used a couple window units to keep the house bearable. Right now there are several people under my house and it sounds like they are having a hard time. Lots of beating on stuff an even once they were yelling at each other. I already had a natural gas furnace under the house. They had to slide it back and install the coils and put in a bigger return. I went with the lowest estimate of $2900 for a 2.5 ton unit (small house). The other guy said 3850. I really hope they get done because i'm working nights this week and would like to sleep. Why would there be such a difference in the estimates?

Cannot comment on the quotes, but im doing the same thing to my 1950's ranch with basement getting finished.

The quote for 2900 is pretty cheap, I actually picked all my supplies up yesterday, luxaire 3 ton, and all my duct work and it cost me about $3000 just for the supplies.

they were just hanging out under the house drinking coronas and hitting the joist with a hammer.

as far as you get what you pay for is not all true. i have a buddy that does it on the side for half the price of a company and you could never tell any difference.

Your buddy is taking money out of my pocket and operating without insurance or permits which means he is also hurting the Homeowners he is doing work for should he get hurt while at their home they are LIABLE for his injuries . This ***** for them as they most likely dont know he doesnt have insurance . I get mega pissed when people around town ask me if I do side work ( I am always in a company shirt and usually in a company truck ) . My usual answer is " No I own the place " . Then they ask me for a card and I have to tell them sorry I dont have any on me ( truth is I dont want to work for a cheap ******* that want his stuff done by someone who would do " side work " ). I always have cards on me :D.

Ok now onto the OP's question . Good luck the right price would have been closer to the higher one ( in order for the job to have been done right and with good quality materials ) . I would bet neither of the doofuses under the house has a Journeymans license and at least one of them should at least by Kentucky code . I call this situation 2 dumbies in a truck when I am giving a bid to a prospective customer . I tell them I wont be the highest bid but if you get one much cheaper than mine you need to make sure someone on the crew that shows up has a Journeymans license .

I'll take that as meaning that your buddy works for a hack company... and your buddy does hack work... therefore, no difference.

No offense, of course.

Imake tons of cash following these guys around and repairing their screwups. And the outcome is usually more $ in the long run. The lowest quote is NEVER the cheapest.

They finished the work. Just a little background. They have been in business 25+ years. It is a father and son business, with no large office, and older trucks (no large overhead). They have a couple folks that help with larger jobs doing the grunt work, those two helpers probably couldn't pass a piss test. They have been in business 25+ years. I know the other two sons that work with me at the power plant. Both of those have a great work ethic and very sharp, one is a instumentation and controls tech and the other is an operator. In all i am pleased with the A/C. We will see if i am still happy in a few years. Another side note the state recently took the old mans house for a road widening project. They made an offer he refused, so they condemned it and paid what they had offered. Now he has to pay rent until he moves out. He had probably lived there 40 years and they just took it.
