There is a section of my floor that is too embarrassing to accurately describe, but just let it be said that there is a considerable build up of dripped polyurethane on it.

Is there any sort of chemical that would dissolve it for a relatively easy scrape up or at least soften it enough to get it off with a little more effort?

I obviously would like to avoid the grinder routine.

May I suggest the Grizzly heat gun? Cheap, good, available through Amazon.com for reasonable shipping costs.
