Hi,

I am wanting to have a new roof put on my 1 story home. Every time I call for a quote, I'm asked: "Is your insurance paying for it." or words similar to.

I have never done any type of a insurance claim involving real estate, so why am I am being asked this? Are there 2 different charts? Can I expect to pay more if insurance is covering a portion or all of it?

Appreciate any advice on this.

Thanks.

Mainly because some of these roofers will raise the cost on purpose if dealing with insurance companies. Ins. co. are a pita to deal with, but some contractors specialize in Ins. repairs and know how much they can push for extra money, or what they might have to deal with (proving that a repair or replacement should fall under ins.) so they want their estimator to be aware of any potential problems.

Unless you have had damage done by mother nature (Ie, hail, lightning, winds, ice dams) make sure you tell them no insurance claim. You are ultimately responsible if its determined to be insurance fraud. (Not saying you are commiting fraud) Might want to find a few more contractors to get a quote from as well.

Most contractors charge more if getting paid by the insurance company. It's not because the insurance company is a pain to deal with either though. I inspect houses all the time with zero damage to the roof when a roofer (salesman) told homeowner they needed a new roof due to hail damage. The homeowner isn't held responsible other than having a claim on their record because they didn't get on the roof and was doing as told by the roofing salesman.
