Getting ready to hang cord reel.

I opened my Costco Snap on cord reel today and I am looking at hanging it from the ceiling in the garage. My garage has two stories with the engineered or plywood joists between the garage ceiling and the floor above. I remember the joists having a board on top and bottom and I think it was a 2x4. They span 24 feet.
How much weight can be hung from these? I suppose a cord reel won’t be very much but how much can be hung from these joists? I would think they are made to hold up weight not hang weight from. Seems the 2x4 part would want to pull down from the center part at some weight.
Screw that came with it looks too small. I will probably go with a larger screw and a pilot hole. Ceiling is finished with dry wall so I have to use a stud finder to find joists and a wood screw with eye into the 2x4 part.
Anybody replaced the short cord going from the ceiling plug-in to the reel? I hope to mount it 5 to 10 feet from the receptacle and would rather replace the cord than add an extension cord.
I am hoping someone has already found any problems I will run into.

How I hung mine is I used lag bolts to secure a piece of 2x6 to span between 3 of my trusses, and then used lag bolts to secure my cord reel and air hose reel to the 2x6

Just lag the thing up there. Locate the bottom chord of the I joist and have a ball. You won't pull the bottom off.

I got one of these from my FiL. WTH is the trick to getting the plug back out of the light? I can't seem to squeeze on the 'S' hard enough to do anything.

I took me a few minutes to figure it out. You don't squeeze, you push or pull either towards the light or away from the light I can't remember which. Once you get it off you will understand because you can see.

No need to worry. The lag screw that comes with it will support a couple of hundred pounds, so long as it is attached correctly to a stud. Just drill a pilot hole first.

IMHO I would think twice about replacing the existing cord; instead I would find a high-quality matching extension cord of the correct length (and the correct wire gauge) and be done with it.

I had the same issue first. You pull the red cap back away from the light, then the light will unplug. It might be a little stiff the first couple times, but loosens up and is way easier the more you use it.

I have had mine for about 3 months and love it, I use it for everything.

Thanks, even after re-reading the instructions I was still trying to squeese the sides; I think I got it now. Hopefully it will loosen up.

I think, like you say, I will give up on rewireing it, won't see it much up there anyway. Maybe paint the extension white to match the paint.
