Getting rid of hottub

I have heard that this is standard but the hot tub that I have has it's own box (subpanel?) outside that is run off the breaker box in the garage.

Obviously you can tell I'm not an electrician. Is this box that is outside that runs the hot tub what is referred to as a subpanel?

I'm getting rid of the hot tub. Can I relocate the dedicated hot tub box from outside to the garage and use it to power new light fixtures and outlets that I want to install?

Assuming the answer to the above is yes, what is a ballpark price to have an electrician relocate the box to an unfinished garage (not including installing the new light fixtures and recepticles)?

Thanks, guys.

that panel usually is the gfci disc.not meant to be a sub-panel.

There are no spaces left in the garage panel?

No, there are not. I don't understand why that is either. The house is 9 years old and nothing unusual has been installed in the house. Do panels in new houses just come already filled up? Seems odd to me. I have contemplated having a larger one put in but I don't know the cost associated with that or what all is involved.

You could use the spaces that are there now and maybe even the wire to feed another panel. Panels are cheap now, some as low as 20$ for 6 space and 25 for 8, you don't need main breaker for this panel. How many spaces are in panel for hot tub?
This is great project to learn a bit on. Good diy job.

I would not waste money on a panel less then 12 spaces, smaller ones are just about useless & a panel full of twin breakers is a sure sign of a cheapskate / lowballer EC or lack of planning....

So, the wiring that comes out of my existing panel that feeds the hot tub box can just feed this new subpanel? The wiring is already coming out of the existing panel. Is it a simple matter of cutting it before it leaves the garage and wiring it to the new subpanel?

Anyone have a book they recommend I could see some instructions on this? I'm leaning toward having a pro do it unless you guys convince me it is easy. I've done some minor work like running new outlets, installing new fixtures with switches, etc. but nothing serious.

The box outside is a disconnect required by code, you can disconnect the wires for the hot tub at the panel (in the garage), remove the wire and the breaker and use the space to add whatever you like (within code).

Thanks, guys. I think I'll give it a shot. What's the worse that can happen, right? (Famous last words).

Electrocution. I don't know if the panel in your garage is a sub or the main, if it's a sub cut all the power going to it, if it's the main I would recommend turning off the main breaker but be careful there will still be live power in the box.

Pretty sure he knows and was using sarcasm.
