So I have a question about Gearwrench sockets. I know GW has stuff from Taiwan and China. And so far it has been my experience that all their 120xp wrenches and sockets are strictly Taiwan where as most other wrenches are China and all other sockets are a **** shoot on which you get. So the question is, has anyone been able to tell a difference in quality? Or recognize a pattern (beyond 120xp all being from Taiwan?

I own gearwrench ratcheting wrenches, their set of 4 flex head 120xp ratchets as well as an entire deep/shallow metric and SAE 1/4 sockets and it's all quality in my eyes. I've used it all professionally and have been for the past 8 years without issue, the ratchets getting the majority of the use. I use the 1/4 sockets on my 1/4 IR 12v cordless ratchet and have yet to have an issue with them. When the "shop tool" GW ratchet wrenches were used with the reverse switch, people would break the 8-10mm trying to break bolts free but other than that they're flawless. I don't think C.O.O. is as much an issue as quality is. There are tools that come out of china that are awesome and some that aren't. People need to stop being so picky about C.O.O. and worry more about quality There's pure SH*T that comes out of USA or germany or wherever. I've snapped snap on sockets removing caliper bolts and switched to a craftsman which broke it free without issue. I've shattered snap on 80 ratchets internals working on brake components as well (do we see a pattern here, they don't need 400 ftlbs!) and switched to ez red at work and had no issue. Mind you these tools that break weren't modified or abused. I would say go for it, i haven't had a GW product besides for a KD test light that i had issues with. I had two and before i used them they had issues so i gave up. But to answer your original question, the sockets are awesome. I'd replace my whole set with them if i didn't already have Grey Pneumatic for my 3/8 set and IR for my 1/4 set. And to be honest, i now reach for 1/4 IR 12v ratchet and 1/4 GW sockets 99% of the time working on light trucks and cars under the hood.

There have been more than a few threads here addressing quality issues with PRC made Gearwrench versus the Taiwan made Gearwrench. I think the most recent one involved a buy one get one free large non ratcheting long pattern combination wrench sets. Lots of fit/finish/feel issues with that lot.
I don't remember any issues with their chrome sockets though. You would be hard pressed to find a better finished socket inside and out than a Gearwrench model. Their chrome swivel or universal sockets leave a bit to be desired though. You can grasp the two halves and move them in and out quite a bit, new out of the package.
Which sockets are you interested in?

I think there are a bunch of patterns depending on tools, time, etc... probably hard to spell all out. Definitely more China now than before.

Overall, the Taiwan sets seem to have better QC... but on anything that's not messed up, the China stuff seems to be very close to the same.

When we want high quality without paying US or EU labor, we go to Taiwan. When we want the absolute lowest cost, we go to China. Pretty simple.
