Looks like the switch can be used with or without GFI protection. Depending on the application I can see where this may be useful.

why do you want your lights on a GFCI? if it trips you will be in the dark.....
That's a good question that I hadn't given any thought to. Once again, I made an assumption that a receptacle was wanted where there was only a switch. Like a bathroom from before there was an outlet required in the bathroom days. There's no way I would want lighting "protected" by a GFCI. I've made it a point to not install GFCI's in normally required places in my own home. Outside, bathrooms, and next to the kitchen sink are the only GFCI's I have and the bathrooms and kitchen sink were there when I bought the place.

I can see a use for it....
I have circuit with a few receptacles in my garage that have neon bar signs plugged in. (same idea as corded shop lights) Since GFCI is required in garage outlets, this device would work.
Of course a GFCI breaker would work. As would a GFCI receptacle upstream or a dead front GFCI.

This device would work well if one was adding a light or fan in a shower that does require ground fault protection. You could do everything in an existing single gang box.

True, but most finished basements start out as unfinished basements.
My house has a finished basement but almost none of the outlets are GFCI, since it was finished long before GFCI was a requirement. A few years ago I added an outlet on a dedicated circuit for the A/C unit. I installed an AFCI breaker and a GFCI outlet for it. If I'm installing new stuff, it's going to be up to the latest code, regardless of how the rest of the house was done.
