We have been working with Ghostshield to get a written statement regarding the application method for the 'flood coat' of Ghostshield 8510. The approved version was returned this morning and we quickly added it to our website. A link is at the end of this post.

Purpose:

It has been determined that a single flood coat of Ghostshield 8510 can be twice as effective (and less expensive) than two coats of 8505.

Useful. Thanks.

Ever think of having a page dedicated to 8510 application (and the like) on your businesses website? Then having a simple URL in your signature here directing people to that specific page. (as its such a common question!) Then if the info changes, you simply update the info on your website.

Thanks again.

Like many, we search the forum but end up reading 20 different threads about it dating back over several years, each w/ slightly different info from multiple people. Your URL would be useful in providing someone w/ the most recent application info etc. Thanks again.

We added a pdf of the specifics to the 8510 page. I added a thread about it last week. On mobile now but will look at adding to sig

I have 936 sq.ft. It is a new garage, poured about 4 weeks ago and just about dried in. Floor is a smooth finish.

1 gallon of 4500 and 5 gallon jug of 8510 will be enough by the sounds of it?

I like the idea of epoxy, but grinding, welding, dragging, jack stands, etc.... just doesn't seem like the right application for epoxy.

I want to clean up spills and not have concrete dust.

4 gallons of 8510 and 1 4500 would be perfect

Ok, I ordered it. Hopefully it's simple to spray on, I assume I can just sweep the sawdust out and get too it.

Floor needs to be clean so the sealer can penetrate. New slabs sweeping is fine. If you had an older slab with oil stains etc you would clean more

ok, I have 4500/8510 in hand and am going to apply the 4500 tomorrow (slab is drying from washing off)

My question- I plan to fill the control joints w/ Sikaflex self leveling sealant.

How long after I apply the 8510 should I wait in order to apply this? 24 hours? 48?

Thanks.

Also, when reapplying the sealer in 10 years or so, would all the Sikaflex need to be removed beforehand? Hoping not. Just thinking ahead. The joints aren't that huge (pole barn), talking less then 1/4", prob more like 1/8" if that.

Thanks again.

Here is the bottom line about Sika.

If you apply it first (before 8510) you have to keep the 8510 off it or wipe it off it. There is a risk of the solvent softening the Sika. If you do it after you could have adhesion issues.... So either way you should tape

yikes, good to know. Do most just skip filling the control joints this way as a result? esp w/ the 8510 application?

Not a deal breaker for me but....glad I asked. Would hate to spend $$ and have it coming off.

I put the 4500 on yesterday, took 1 1/3 gallons (of actual 4500, I diluted w/ distilled water). So now on the week wait.

We have tons of people using Sika flex and 8510. No one has had an issue but I like for people to be aware of the risks.

Apologies if this question is getting off topic. I also would like to caulk the joints.

What tape would you recommend for best success in covering the crack control joints during 8510 application? 1" wide blue painter's tape? Or 2" wide duct tape?

Thank you!

The narrowest tape you can find and still cover the joint.

I am trying to think of a way to phrase this next sentance..... If this were my own garage, understanding that if there were an issue it would be my own fault..... I would just be really careful at the joints and spray right up to them and not in them as much as possible. Wait 12 hours and apply Sika. There is some risk of less than perfect adhesion, but if you are good with the sprayer it works fine. This is not something I would typically say on a forum like this so again its at your own risk

Since you are talking Sika...I just had my floor epoxied and some ran into the joints....can I still apply Sika or will it not adhere where epoxy entered the joint?
Thanks,

I have a paver driveway that needs sealing, I've used 8505 on other paver projects and would like the improved performance of the 8510.

Do you know if the recommend densifier on the already more dense concrete pavers ? Any reason not to go with 8510 on concrete pavers?

When you say " apply past saturation " - that means until it puddles on top - is it ok to leave the puddles? Or are you assuming that they are mopped up/spread away after sitting there for a bit?

I would not use 4500 for this application. However, for an exterior application, I would do two coats, wet on wet. Puddles are ok with this product, but for exterior, I would apply until the surface is saturated, wait a couple of minutes and hit it with the second application. I ususally get 400 SF/ gallon / coat when using this method

So I sprayed this stuff on today. 3.5 gallons of water to a jug of 4500.

All 900 sq.ft. Only took about 3 gallons by following the directions to not over apply and not let puddle. I sprayed everything twice. Like took a pass and then another about a minute later.

Seemed to be just enough that it wasn’t standing. But I thought it would take more????

I sprayed 4500 last week and only did 1 pass, at that one of my slabs took a while to 'dry' or soak in. Everywhere I read stated strictly to not overapply so I was a bit apprehensive about putting too much on.

I diluted too and have about 2/3 of a bottle of 4500 left (undiluted). Not sure what to do w/ it!

Absorption varies but you can respray it before doing the 8510. I did include that in the notes online for the flood coat. Also, it is fine to use on patio, sidewalks etc

Do you recommend a certain sprayer for applying the 4500 n 8510? I bought 14 gallons and am planning to put it down in the next couple weeks but not sure what sprayer to use. Will a $20 cheap frome Home Depot work?

Make sure your sprayer is chemical proof.
Color, I used stain prior to doing anything. It doesn’t pop like the other coatings but it’s not gray either.
Ghostshield will inhibit other coatings from attaching to it. Even ice won’t stick.

Some of them at HD had really bad reviews. This one was fair. I used it to apply last week, it worked well. Buy some acetone to clean it after. They make a 3 gallon version too.

Ok that’s good to know that the echo one works.

I’m also looking at this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Q3W0GS/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It’s like double the money but has brass and a fan nozzle. How many sqft did you do? I have 4K to do. I had no idea Chaplin makes like 75 different sprayers.. and they basically say to call to find out which one will work with your chemicals. That echo one has Vito’s seals which is good for chemical resistance.

This is the same sprayer I used to do 4k sq ft shop. I just rinsed it out with water after and still working good to this day.

I have new concrete, is there something you can add to 8510 to give it some colour?
If I use this product how hard is it to do an epoxy in the future?

You would need to grind the floor down to epoxy in the future.

We are testing some stains now.

We suggest a chemical resistant sprayer. Typically closer to $35-$40

if I get the formulation right, I'd need 1 gallon of the 4500 and 7 gallons of the 8510 to do 2000 sq ft of 1-month-old concrete. The finish is a smooth (very smooth) trowel finish - you can actually see a reflection in some areas when the light is right.

Any special instructions/tips for highly troweled concrete?

1 gallon of 4500 will be close but at 4:1 should be good. 7 gallons dead

I found the discussion about joint filler and whether to do it before or after. That was for polyurea. I am thinking about using MM-80 epoxy and they recommend applying prior to sealing, any feedback from your end, any issues with 4500 or 8510 being applied onto MM-80?

Tape it or wipe it off. 8510 and 4500 won't soak in. Will leave a sticky mess on top
