Girt Spacing

I’m building a 75’ x 27’ x 16’ tall metal building. My walls are built using 2x6 studs 32” OC with a double studs at section joints (every 16’).

Trying to determine what spacing I should use for my girts. I plan to use a 2x6 girt at bottom and at top, then use 2x4 girts every X inches. I see people using 24” spacing but that seems like overkill.

Can I use 36” spacing? Thoughts?

Thank you

24" spacing is set for a 4' sheet of OSB for your sheathing. If you can find sheathing that is 6' wide I guess 36" would fine for the girt spacing...

Depends on the wind you believe you will get. I did 2' spacing for both purlins and girts. 2x4's are pretty cheap and it only adds strength.

I ended up with about 30ish inch spacing between girts on my walls. No need to stick with standard “centers” if you are just hanging metal. I took the total distance, deducted for thickness of wood and made the girts evenly spaced. I then cut a couple of 2x4s to that length and used them as spacers to hold the girts up and screw off.

Your studs are 32" oc they ultimately carry the wind load. Are the girts inset (between the studs) or continuous (outside the studs) ? with 32" oc vert supports it really doesn't matter! But, for pre engineered metal buildings with 26 ga panels our standard girt spacing was 5 ft on center. Think about it, for 30 psf snow load with 26 ga panels- purlin spacing is 5 ft. Wind uplift may require closer spacing tho. Basically, place the girts where convenient to your method of construction or insulation situation. 4' pieces of rigid insul. between the girts makes a good system.

If you haven’t already you need to install shear bracing. The sheet metal is not rated or designed to provide shear value.
