Give me your thoughts or comments on this old compressor

My grandfather recently passed away and so the family is going through his belongings. I have a weak spot in me for any old tools especially if they are heavy :)

Well here is an old compressor that I got my hands on, if you look closely in the pictures the patent date I believe is 1925. It appears to be an old AC compressor bolted to a GE 1/4 hp 1725 rpm motor.

Electric cord is wired right into the motor so there is no switch or pressure switch, and the air hose is coming right off the compressor no tank just direct. And this thing is heavy! I'm guessing 80 to 100 pounds motor and compressor together. So other than posting this to hear a few of your comments, do you think it would be a good idea to wire it up to a pressure switch and add a tank?

I'm thinking you should keep it simple, the way your Grandpa had it. That's only a 1/4 horse motor and it probably won't want to pump up a tank to very much PSI. If you want a compressor with tank and pressure switch there should be more than a few on your local CL with a lot more HP to do whatever you need.

Being an air conditioning compressor, it will probably make plenty of pressure. I am surprised that there isn't a pressure cutoff somewhere. It could make more pressure than that hose can handle.

If you have an application that needs more volume, you can tee in a portable tank to the line.

Mine that is similar has a blow-off in the back, so if it cant go out the hose, it discharges back towards the motor.
