Given a Modine PD50

Hey All I was given a modine pd 50 natural gas heater. Im going to be swithcing it over to propane, and installing it in my garage. I've never really done much with heating systems before so I have a few questions.

1. what do i do for venting? I was going to run a duct of some sort horizontally over to my wall then turn it to face vertically once its outside with a rain cap on it.

2. Can I run black pipe right into the heater? Im not sure I like the idea of those flexible lines.

3. None of the wiring is labled, so Im still trying to decipher that.

Youll need to get the model # and find out if they make a conversion kit for propane you can buy for it.
I prefer running gas lines with threaded black pipe also,sizing will depend on distance from tank to heater,I would vent it with b-vent pipe but check your local codes for requirements and clearances

With the Model # and Serial #, just call Modine and they can tell you YEAR of Manufacture, and point you in right direction on their website. Be aware that Heat Exchangers are only warrantied for 10 years.

There might be a reason you were given the "Free" heater, make sure it's safe to use . . . . thus no cracks in Heat Exchanger.

Sounds like you need to call local plumber to check out heater and assist in the install. Improper venting could leak carbon monoxide in garage . . . not good.

I have the install manual and wiring diagrams for the Modine PD series unit heaters which should answer alot of your questions if you want them just give me a email address.

One thing to keep in mind is that with a gravity vent heater your horizontal run can only be 75% of your vertical run. (EX: If you go 7.5' horizontally your vertical must be at least 10')

CNG, my father in law gave it to me out of his shop..it better be safe!!! Yeah the venting I can do, I just didn't know the whole horizontal vs verticle thing. Conversion kit is availible for about 70 bucks.

Heat exchangers are not available to be purchased by the public anymore due to regulations in place. They can often cost as much or more than a replacement heater.
