I use to give away my old Snap On ratchets when I bought the latest and greatest new Snap On ratchets. After joining this site I wish I still had those old Snap On ratchets. When I started buying Snap On ratchets they only had 30 tooth gears.

I just gave my brother one of my nice Prentiss vises for his b-day.

One of the best things I have ever given to him in 36 years. He was psyched and so was I.

My mother is 84 years old and has a small tool box at her apartment. Every Christmas I buy at least one tool for her tool box along with what ever else I give her for Christmas. Mom loves her tools.....

I have a friend I hang out with from time to time who has a small tool box of basic, generic tools. Last week, I was visiting and noticed there were some tools on the table. It was explained to me these were headed to Goodwill as part of a donation if my friend didn't want them. So they were picked up and brought home, at which point I saw them.
Nothing special, except a pair of steel handled smooth jawed Channel Locks in original pouch. Knowing I would be interested in them, the friend said I could have them. They now reside in my Channel Lock drawer at home.
Wanting to return the favor, I gathered together some extra tools I had - 4 pairs of China mini pliers, couple of Craftsman screwdrivers, an old beat up pair of vice grips and gifted them to the friend as a thank you.
Which brings me to my question. When was the last time you gave tools to someone?

A couple weeks ago, i have a set of Clic-R clamp pliers to the guy i work with. I often give tools to friends when i upgrade or have no use for them. I'd rather give them to someone who will use them than sell them or keep them and not use them.

This doesn't apply in every case though, i keep many.

I also often buy new tools to give to friends. I like to give people presents.

I do want to add though that these are good quality tools and the cheap stuff is not worth my time or effort when time is of the essence. I have many cheap tools but wouldnt want them on my engine so if you are thinking of donating please make sure that they are of the quality that if your life depended on it they wont break or cause more issues.

I've been a volunteer firefighter for more than 20 years. I would never donate Chicom **** to our FD. But i get lots of good Anerican tools that have little more than scrap value on eBay. While some of it ends up on the rigs, there's a large Craftsman top box in the house that we donated, and it is full with tools that we contributed.

I often give tools to my children. Also to guys at work. What goes around comes around. After doing some free electrical work for a guy, he said do you want any of these things a brand new metric-sae tap and die set. Exact same as Snap-on-Matco.He said Ill never use it. Just last week Tooltopia had infrared thermometors for 32 bucks on the HOT DEAL INDEX so I got 2 and sent one to my son in law. If they have the tools they try the jobs and learn how to do all sorts of jobs.
