Last night on my way to CVS I walked by a beautiful young woman who was struggling with a flat tire. She was with a couple of other people so I figured between the 3 of them they'd get it fixed.
On my way back she was still there and her friends ( revealed to be passerbys)
were gone.
I offered to help and found she had gotten one bolt off and the others were stuck good and weren't gonna move with the ****** wrench that came with her car. I lived five minutes walk away so I went home, got my 1/2" drive socket set.
Even with a breaker bar and pulling as hard as i could the bolts weren't moving . I had her stand on it and still nothing. While she was on the phone I kept trying and by hand got the rest of the bolts off.
It confused me for a bit. How could those bolts stand up to her jumping on the bar and then loosen for me by hand. Then I thougt about exactly what I did before they loosened. Subcounsiously I must have remembered a tip I had read here on the journal ..
Impact can work where steady pressure won't so smack the handle with the palm of your hand. And that's exactly what I did.

Thanks. While I was putting the bolts back on she noticed how the breaker bar swiveled and was faster than the plain L handle wrench that came with her car.
I ended up giving it to her since I've got a bunch.

Triple A has an on-board compressor so they can air up the donut spare.

Having a little 12v compressor would have been handy, and I'm thinking one would be good gift for daughter that is off to college, plus a breaker bar.

I've got portable air tank which is also useful when coming from home garage so you can bring along air, even if you don't have portable compressor.

SIDE STORY: Was exiting a divided highway one day and right there was elderly couple with flat tire and struggling to do anything with scissor jack. As luck would have it, I had my floor jack in bed of truck. In matter of couple minutes, I had car up in air and tire changed. Man that couple thanked me over & over and my trusty old Craftsman floor jack did it's job.

When she saw that I couldn't get the bolts off she decided to try anyway.

I'm 44 and she was around 25 maybe late 20's tops so I couldn't have asked her out anyway.

I've assisted in changing out a few flats and every spare pulled out of the trunk is flat! Fortunately I always carry a little 12v compressor to get it inflated and get the stranded motorist to the nearest tire repair shop.

a cheap floorjack weighs close to 50-60 pounds. even the small compact ones weigh quite a bit for such a small jack. if there is no where for that jack to sit in the trunk its going to bounch around and destroy the inside.

the best thing for a woman to have, especially if she is petite like my wife is, is the jack that comes with the car and a good handle to turn it with to jack the car up. she isn't going to put it up on 4 jack stands at the side of the road, and the difference between using a screwjack that came with the car and a hydraulic floor jack from walmart, is one is meant to be the jackstand as well and the other requires you to put a jack stand in the car also.

those little jacks that come with cars are the perfect solution for a roadside one tire fix. small, light, quick, and safe. the only thing you should carry alongside that jack is a small compressor for pumping a tire up, if you happen to need air like the young lady did, you can easily pull out a 12v compressor while your car in running, and pump the spare up, or patch a tire and then pump it back up and be on your way instead of waiting for a tow truck which might take a few hours to get there if its not an emergency.

heres a tip just incase. whether its being nice or dropping a hint. give her a business card and tell her to give a call if her car doesn't make it home. then she has the option to call again if she really does run into trouble, or if she wants to be nice

very good idea, but further improve this idea by making it a sale coupon $59 HF aluminum jack for very light weight and much more beefy jacking.

If you want to make everything super easy, ditch the compressor idea and put one of these in the car:

Combine that with the most simple jack that will fit under the vehicle (scissor, bottle, trolley, or even exhaust). Then, toss in a real breaker bar (pre-fitted with an extension to get around the tire or wheel rim) and a high quality socket, and you've got a very safe kit that's much easier to use.

I hate Scissor jacks, and they aren't exactly stupid-proof, but if that's all that will fit, then so be it. It's best to use something else if possible, though.

Oh! This is something I just learned about a week ago...

Always keep a stick type pressure gauge on hand. Always.

I've got a lot of fancy stuff, but it all froze or failed last week when the vehicle was parked overnight and I wanted to check someone's tire pressure the next morning.

My fluid filled gauge turned to molasses, the digital gauge seemed to believe every tire I checked was at precisely 26.6 PSI, and the normal dial just ceased to function.

I'm an idiot. I've got several of those cheap gauges, but I didn't pack any of them.

That's something I never considered until I encountered it.

It weighs 20 pounds. They are very handy. I also carry a breakover with the socket that fits the lugs. And a small piece of plywood to sit under the jack when I use it. Use a bungee cord to secure it. Very useful. I can have a flat off and the spare back on before most people have the standard equipment jack and handle out of the trunk.

I don't get under the car while changing a flat tire; but I would rather trust a floor jack than any jack that comes with the car. But that's just me......
