glass jar storage ?

hi just curious does anybody use glass jars or soup cans for storage for hardware etc i was thinking on having a some type of shelves on the back of my workbench with glass jar storage

Glass jars work, but it's easy to break one. I use the plastic peanut butter and mayonnaise jars.

I used baby food jars in clear plastic bins for small hardware. it is nice becuase you can see through the bin from below so you can quickly review what is in each jar.

i am planning on using canning jars with the lids screwed to the bottom of a shelf (hanging under the shelf) for bolts and nuts.

I'd love to see some pictures of guys doing this.

Jelly jars work best. Locate a 1x4 above the workbench and screw the lids to it, then hang the jars from that. My dad had one that was made from a piece of 4x4, with small jars on all 4 sides. Just spin it around to find what you want. I recommend jelly made with Splenda and whole wheat biscuits .

My dad has baby-food jar racks like this... he made them just as soon as he got a steady supply of baby food jars. That'd be me, 40 years ago.

As my brothers came along, I clearly remember the sink full of empty baby food jars soaking overnight in water to loosen the labels.
And to this day, my mom still gripes about scraping those labels off.

A few jars have been broken over the years, but it hasn't been more than a few.

For the shelf the jars sit on, my dad angled them back a couple degrees, so the jars are tipped back into the wall, so they aren't likely to fall forward and hit the floor while removing its neighbor.

My shelves have a small board across the front to stop any from jumping out ahead of time. Yes a few do get dropped over the years, but no big deal, the neighbours have kept me well supplied. Mostly use the larger size.
