Deep broached 3/8" CR-Mo SAE Deep Impact Sockets?

I've been working on my vehicles a lot more lately, and noticed two things. First, my ratchets (air or manual), electric or air impact wrench are usually in a tight spot with the back against something, thanks to tighter and tighter auto packaging. Second, I keep finding the shallow broached "deep" sockets in my tool sets to be totally useless on automobiles.

I noticed this first with my chrome 3/8" SK chome shallow broach "deep" sockets and two water pumps. I have to work around an obstruction in front of the ratchet handle and something (fan, shock tower) right behind the head. The only alternative to a true deep-well is using none, extra-short, and very short extensions on a shallow socket, not a lot of fun when you can just slip a true deep-well on there and then go at it. I had to go dig up my backup Craftsman sockets to get those jobs done. Now the Craftsman's are up front and the SK's are in the junk drawer and will probably go on eBay soon.

Then it was shock absorbers, you know the drill where the top shaft spins as you try to wrench tighten a nut on it. My old IR air ratchet has enough impact to it that it can spin a nut on, but on my 4x4 there's just enough room above the shaft to get a ratchet in there, and that's about it. I couldn't fit a 1/2" deep impact socket+1/2-3/8 adapter+ratchet in there, so I ended up using a short impact socket to start, followed by abusing a deep-broached chrome socket. I don't like doing that, using chrome sockets on an air tool, but I got the job done.

So I was shopping for onsie-twosies chrome sockets to replace some shallow broached "deep" sockets, and came across a US made 3/8 impact Kobalt by Wright sockets, not too tall, at my favorite candy store, Cripes. What's not to like? Should be a perfect match for my air ratchet. Well I got them and what do you know, shallow broached. I supposed they are just the thing for assembly lines putting nuts on studs, over and over again, on an assembly line with tons and tons of clearance above and below... useless to me.

So, question, US made 6-point 3/8" impact sockets with deep broaching, do they exist? If not I'll go Taiwan, maybe about Gray or Tekton, just not Cr-V, gotta be deep broached.

Yeah, there are times when a full broached socket just fills the bill. My old Bonney's are not full-depth broached. And I do run into situations where that is a problem.

I guess I didn't realize that there were that many sockets out there that aren't full length broached. I think all of mine are (Craftsman, Snap-On, and a smattering of HF impact sockets).

I may not have been clear, I'm looking for deep 3/8" 6-point impact set, not China/India made, not Carbon or Cr-V (I guess that rules out Tekton).

MOST but not all Craftsman deeps are deeply broached. I just replaced a few old cman 3/8" chrome sockets that were not.

I took a look at Allen on Mills Fleet Farm, they don't have a deep 3/8 set, a 1/2" drive deep set on eBay is obviously short broached.

The price is right for Menard's Masterforce MF19501 and they are US, but I was hoping for more than 8 pieces, the description online is obviously for the non-impact chromed socket set, and of course no information on how deeply it is broached. Maybe someone here has it and can look? I was kind of hoping for a larger set, though, and I have no idea if it's Cr-V or Cr-Mo.

The Grey 1226M is cheap enough I'll take the short sockets, it's only 10 bucks more than the 1213D 12-piece set, and it's Cr-Mo... can anyone verify how deeply it's broached?

I'm pretty sure that Armstrong has what you are looking for, but not 100% positive.

Good question, the higher the percentage the better, but I'll consider whatever's out there. 65% would probably do.

As far as HF, I have a few of their older PittPro 1/2" impacts for gap fillers, they were COO Taiwan, but this thread indicates there are/have been both China and Taiwan COO's for impact sockets: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166732

Or maybe you meant the steel. A quick search for 3/8 SAE indicates they are Cr-V.

I'm willing to spend more to avoid Cr-V for safety reasons. I'm trying to avoid the whole "buy twice" thing, which I'm going through on my 1/2" impact set.

In your basement...seriously, go look now!

I found something close to what you're looking for but it's a 12 point (boo!).

I also found another that is Cr-Moly, 6 point, reportedly deep broached on: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003MWHOPM/?tag=atomicindus08-20

The second one is GW so it's Taiwanese, not USA.

Thanks, but despite the name of the site, I don't see any evidence it really is US made (or even Taiwan made). EDIT: OK, Sunex brand, so Taiwan... right?

Amazon has great return policy and I have prime, but the shape of those small sockets concerns me. I think when the broaching goes deep, the taper follows it... but I could be wrong.

I was talking impacts, not chrome from Cman. All fully broached. Old = US made. Allen/Masterforce will be identical.

Thanks everyone!

I almost ordered the Grey's, I like the thin wall design, then found the specs on their website. The 3/8 6-pt deep impact depth averages about twice the fastener width, the 12-point is only nut width. It can be found in dimension "D" here, after expanding "3/8" Drive - 6 Point": http://www.gpsocket.com/products/category.phtml/individuals_and_attachments/3_8/

Kudos to Grey for publishing that information, and they are better than the 1:1 depth:width ratio found elsewhere, but not exactly what I am looking for.

I found a set of 3/8 Cornwells on fleabay, but that particular set has obviously shallow broaching (check out the second picture): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cornwell-To...hash=item4ae799433d&item=321713161021&vxp=mtr

I'll check out the IR's, they are Cr-Mo, and I like my IR 1/2 shallow metric impact set. As far as I can tell they only come in an 8-pack (SK3M8L), missing 12 and 18mm. But they ARE available singly from scissorman's suggested website- thanks for that!

Er, I rarely encounter non-flanged fasteners on cars. The only non-flanged nut I have to remove are the nylon lock nuts.

I'm very happy for you abvw, but I've already delineated my "deep" automotive experiences in the original post.

I tried to read-up on IR sockets, but this link
http://www.ingersollrandproducts.co...s/fastening/literature-fastening-and-drilling
leads to an non-displaying PDF: http://www.ingersollrandproducts.com/cordless/pdf/Impact Socket Catalog.pdf

I found a 2010 version here:
http://www.flexibleindustrial.com/core/media/media.nl?id=81152&c=337772&h=822aea8bdc68a098402c

Which indicates that the 3/8" deep 14mm (just to pick one) has a 0.67"/17mm deep hex broach in a 2.48"/63mm socket. I don't consider that very deep. Maybe things have changed since the 2010 document, if someone can compare that to a physical example, I'd appreciate it.

I'm looking at Sunex now. They are Cr-Mo and I've heard nothing but good about them.

On page 90 of Sunex's catalog, the "T1" dimension (hex depth) runs from 12 to 25mm for sockets 7mm through 22mm in their 13 pc deep set, for reference the 14mm socket is 24mm of hex. That's acceptable. I'd really like a little deeper, but if I can't find anything deeper than Sunex, I'll order their set 3329 next week, the "3/8-Inch Drive Standard and Deep Metric Master Impact Socket Set, 29-Piece".

If I find something deeper in something really cheap, I could always pick them up as well save them for depth clearance issues. Cr-Mo sockets are generally thinner, maybe some CR-V's are deeper, so maybe I can't have my cake and eat it too, but I might be able to have both cake and pie. :dunno:

Follow-up... I ended up with the Sunex 3329 set. Some time later I added an Astro Onyx Nano and I'm very happy with the combination. I've also purchased some 3/8 and 1/2" Sunex hex and torx sets as well.

Craftsman is one of the few truly full length broached sockets.

Old Crafstman is us made and deep broached........

I think you're right. Older Craftsman deep sockets with the =V= manufacturer's mark are broached top to bottom. Sears/Craftsman used to be pretty good stuff back in the day.

I would also recommend sunex or gray pneumatic for a 3/4 drive you will not need a snap on grade of sockets
