I have searched google and eBay, and have not been able to find anything like this. Does anyone have any idea what the original purpose of "gloves in a can" would have been?

The gloves appear to be made of a thick, possibly heat resistant material..

They are most likely for a very hot work environment and the tube was mounted near or on the machine where the work was performed. They never got lost and were always ready for anybody that needed to work.

We have small, machine specific tool stations near all of our machines. Custom tools, wrenches, oil cans and even gloves are in each box. That way you never have to run to the main shop and grab the nicer tools for you work.

Safety red leads me to believe they may be for use in case of emergency, like a fire blanket.

that looks to me to be a one time availability type item,as it would appear to be difficult to get them back into the can after use.

Agreed. The safety red, AND the fact that they had to be rolled up like a fire blanket led me to the same conclusion.
