Aloha fellow garage aficianados. In the process of acquiring my first house, garage to follow immediately after. (Still in the steel vs pole vs wood frame decision phase)...in the meantime I was referred here with a toolbox question.
I acquired this here fancy gm goodwrench toolbox over the weekend. I know it's technically not a tool, but it's where my tools will now spend their leisure time...
Anyone ever see one of these before or know anything about them? I poked around for a bit online, but couldn't find much info, save for one or two that were sold at estate auctions in the past few years. Box seems decent for its age, ball bearing drawers, heavy steel, solidly built. Keys say international on them. Were they possibly something gm dealerships offered their techs? Or maybe a Kmart special in the 90s when I wasn't aware?

I remember hearing about tools and such so marked. I thought it was a marketing strategy, same tools and tool boxes just fancier finish and labeling. But I could be all wrong.

Heck, it looks great. If it's working for you, I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a solid toolbox and I got it for a decent price. I'm just curious as to its origin, mainly because I couldn't find any sales info or literature about it online.

Being as the keys say International, that may be the OEM. Northern Tool carries them and some if not all of them are made in Canada. Either way, it’s a nice looking box and has a nice drawer layout in my opinion. I like the 2 full length drawers.

i have most of a set of wrenches that i got at sam's club many years ago branded as mr goodwrench. they had sae and metric sets that went up to about 3/4 and 19mm or so. made in usa and to my best guess they were made by armstrong, long and full polish. similar to the cman professional wrenches and pretty damn nice to use.

i think at various times over the years the name had been used under license to market tools varying from good like the ones i have seen here to the last ones i had seen that were garbage

I really like the drawer layout as well. the two big drawers have double thick steel on the bottom and beefed up bearings on the slides as well...the only "issue" is the bubbling gold foil on the drawer pulls.think I'm just going to remove them. Not high on the priority list, but possibly replace them with some non gold drawer pull covers if they make such a thing.

Most likely International, possibly Homak. Both of them would put labels on for other companies. International used the full with drawer on their top boxes like that.

Awesome.thanks for the info gents...started looking around online for some new drawer pull covers. Not a particularly easy item to find, seems to be a few different names for these things.

I know this is an older thread but maybe someone has an answer to how to remove the slides on my GM Goodwrench Limited Edition toolbox. I have looked several times but there are no levers to release the drawers. There are "tabs" that might possibly hold the drawer in place but if I am wrong I will likely ruin the slide itself. I found replacement drawer slides for this box on eBay. I am certain it was made by SPG International, which, of course, is out of business as others have noted.
If anyone has removed the slides from the two full length drawers I would appreciate your help.

I own one of these and found replacement slides for the two full length drawers but cannot find a way to remove the drawers from the cabinet. There are "tabs" on the sides but if I pry them open and they do not release the drawer I likely ruined the slide. Have you ever removed either of the two full length drawers?

I know this thread is old but I wanted to chime in. My dad purchased one of these, probably over 20 years ago from Sam’s Club. Not sure why because he never turned a wrench in his life, he just thought it would look nice in his garage. We used it at our truck shop to store “clean,” shop-owned tools, calipers, dial gauges etc. I was going to list it in the classifieds so I did a google search and found this thread. It’s not a bad box at all. It’s obviously not super thick steel, but for an average DIYer it would be fine. I was trying to determine a fair price for it. No idea what it went for new.

Welcome,

What part of the country you in? Condition of box? Top and Bottom box? Exact same as picture via OP? Black paint?

Near Philadelphia. It looks identical to the one pictured, but I wouldn’t swear to it in court. Black, still has the plastic shrink wrap on the drawer handles. It’s filthy from being in a truck shop for many years, but it’s it nice shape because we didn’t really use it. There’s unfortunately one spot where something hit a corner and it’s dented, but its not too bad. I have pictures. I’ll try and post them tonight or tomorrow. Did I mention it’s dirty?

The pictures I have ****, because it is in a packed garage. I don’t have a good front shot of it, but I can try and grab one next time I’m there.
