I don't care about the politics GM has made total **** for 3 decades, and probably won't ever make a good car under 50K

While i have no dog in the fight...and could personally care less, i find your broad brush...amusing. Every mechanic i have ever employed or worked with, with the exception of two or three have been G.M guys. These are people who fix cars for a living and know a lot more about vehicles than what car and driver or their uncle tells them. You guys are killing me with this Ford, GM, foreign argument. Buy what you like and dont tell others how to spend their money. They all make models that are good and they all make models that are garbage. Me...i buy what i like and that depends on the model year. I know the problem areas of whatever i buy and i just fix em when they break and sell em when i dont want them anymore.

Are these guys interested more in buying quality and dependability or buying "American". Not for nothing but that statement flies in the face of every single mechanic i've ever known who didnt have some bias either because they need to buy "American" or because they have some deep seeded non-sensical hate for anything Asian.

Honestly...everybody buys American where i am from. I wasn't even considering imports and honestly would not comment on their quality as i don't see enough of them to judge...just commenting on the big three. I do forget that not everyone on this site is from the rust belt...my bad

Not sure what this has to do with anything or if it was even directed at me but im from Boston...sadly. Plenty of rusty junk around here. This year vehicles have been driving through more sand and salt than snow.

lol...just that im from Michigan...home of the big three. Everyone around here drives American cars. For every 100 cars i see...95 of them are domestic thats all. Just saying that i forget that its not like that everywhere.

BTT, I saw the Ford display and the Lista boxes were very nice, but I couldn't help but shake my head when I saw the tech assembling and disassembling the engine with an impact using regular Craftsman chrome sockets. I mean you're at an autoshow, use the right tools!

America’s bailout-free automaker has had more than its fair share of government help to beat the debt. According to the WSJ [sub], Ford’s extensive collection of government loan guarantees has been key to its ability to pay down more expensive debt accumulated during Ford’s 2006 restructuring.

Last week’s US Export-Import Bank loan of $250m was just the latest in a string of government loan guarantees that have helped Ford cut its debt. THe UK government also recently put a $572m guarantee for a $715m European Investment Bank loan to Ford. The EIB has also promised Ford $527.6m to produce cars in Romania. Ford has also taken on $1.8b in low-cost Department of Energy loans this year, on top of last year’s $5.9b DOE “Section 136″ retooling loan. And the help is working

In April [Ford] made a $3 billion pre-payment on a $7.5 billion revolving loan.

In June, it paid $3.8 billion in cash to the United Auto Workers Retiree Medical Benefits Trust. A large chunk of the payment for retired worker health-care benefits was paid ahead of schedule.

Ford said its total debt payment in the second quarter should yield annual interest savings of more than $470 million.

I've driven GM trucks since 1986 when I bought my 1st new truck. Bought 5 more over the years and multitudes of stock on good ol GM as well. After 2008 I'll never buy another GM vehicle unless nothing else is available. I'd rather drive a Yugo!! At least they go out of buisness the right way. Good ol GM took my 6000 shares and flushed them down the toilet, then comes back as the same ol but new GM.

You could have sold out when the stock began to drop. It wasn't a big surprise they went bankrupt. You screwed up by not selling and want to blame someone else.

Do you buy stuff from Sears? If you do, you'd better stop. Sears stock went to zero with the merger with K-Mart. I guess no Craftsman or Kenmore for you.

Have you driven a newer Chevy truck or car? Or do you just think they are sh!t because the magazines put them down for so long or because most people on this thread don't seem to like GM? Probably the latter, though if got off your high horse and drove a new Chevy truck you'd be surprised how well it rides, the fuel mileage and its longevity.

first, I bet these people are "engineers", not "techs". techs don't get a chance to go to do fancy stuff.

I've been working with few "engineers", based on 1st hand experience, they probably don't even know what's the difference between black sockets and chrome sockets.

Yeah it wasn't a craftsman bash, I just thought it odd to see a impact used with regular sockets. Even if they were engineers, they know better too. My guess is, that it was a marketing company...

It's called marketing. GM just reported record profits, which go to its shareholders in the end. Guess who that is? Perhaps it's time to admit the bankruptcy and cost-trimming is working. Obviously some people lost benefits/jobs/etc. in the process, but without GM there would have been a lot more losses.

Ford has some expensive pre-built table legs and butcher block tops, as well as a Lista. GM has some spray-painted shelves with desktops, rental trusses, some CHEAP chairs, a $30 Craftsman stool and a Craftsman box. They both probably spent about the same.

Neither says anything about either company, it's all just what marketing felt like doing on this particular day.

If you look closely the GM workbenches are actually pallet racking.

I would go with Ford over GM. The Ford offering is more appealing and their designs are more up to date. GM always seems 2 years behind on there design and interior, except for Caddy.

But for cars, personally I go with BMW or VW, and trucks jeep.
