Hello all you garagemaholics-
I have been living with my 4 car attached garage for 20 years now. With my wife consuming one, my 88 Thunderbird TC in one, my 94 Pasquali 462 (tractor)IMG00149-20110712-1818.jpgin one, and the lathe / bridgeport and Vidmers (+kegerator) in the last I am out of room for expansion.
I have been looking for a "Building" for about a year or so and have a downpayment spent on a 40X60 Gambrel steel "barn". I have purchased a portable crane, and have also aquired a bobcat 763 to make it all go faster when working alone. I have been waiting for 5 weeks for zoning to approve my applcation- and they have not givin me any reason why they havent approved it yet. It could be that a town council member lives behind me and has said "Over my dead body are you putting up a barn"! I comply with every regulation, and have examples of smaller houses with same property that got approved so I am confident on Wednesday I will have permission. I sent a clearly stated letter with examples of other approved projects, and i will not stop my efforts since I am already in for a significant amount of money.
In any case- I plant to do this pretty much by myself. I have the "road" cleared and will be starting to place stone after I get all of the top soil relocated, one ton at a time with the workman. I don't have a bulldozer:( I did get approval to run the conduit for the electrical service from the nearest pole- 325 ft of 3 inch conduit which will go under the driveway to barn. The driveway will be turfstone- like pavers that grass grows through. It keeps it pretty and fucntional year round. About $1 / sq.ft. Im planning 36 inch than 36 gap and then 36 inches- wide enough for my trailer. Conduit in center for future access / additions.
The building is coming from Armstrong- after a great deal of searching and talking they were the best option for my gambrel roof. I did not allow them to pressure me into buying a sale building or any other tactic to get anythinhg other than exactly what I want. I am paying nothing in change orders etc. I am so far happy with the transaction to date. I will approve drawings for final stamp after I get through zoning. If I should hit a legal hurdle I will pay for a boost to get over it- and worst case compromise on building size and pay for that change.
I am a mechanical engineer / landscaper / farmer / machinist/ concrete finisher / carpenter / rigger /... I have done 3 complete additoons already and feel comfortable - well almost -with this project. The crane is my primary tool for the building erection- it is awesome! It was build to change engines on a C-130. Rated for 6000 lbs to 45 ft, in a 15 ft radius arc of 180 degrees. My bay spacing is 20 ft- so I can do two frame sections from one spot, and reach out with load to center of the span to put up purlins. The crane was a project and I have a million pictures- but it is now significantly better than new! I chnged the manual valves to a wireless remote control- so I can have a spud wrench in one hand and control of load in the other! It was converted to a gas engine before i got it, which I am leaving. I did fix the brakes and put a proper wedge cable end on it. The 10,000 lb axle I made and used aircraft tires to hold it is another project in itself. All I can say is I pulled it from the house out to the street to turn it around, and then made it up my dirt path to the site without any issues. I will set it up the day I get my zoning signed off.
