I am a disabled vet and a couple of my friends I turn wrenches with are always in need of a way to blow off steam. Most of us have been diagnosed with PTSD...others are in denial.
While tinkering with my daughters dune-buggy, I had an idea. Why not map out a path on my property where me and a few close friends could run a few laps, drink beer and bring the alert level down.
I am still in the planning stages, but my goal is to grab 2 or 3 low slung go-karts with the slicks for rear wheels, and HF 6hp Predator engines.
Place braking cones and flags as needed until we all get familiar...and not too drunk.
It will be 3 laps to determine the winner. I am sure the Army guys will win, the Airforce guys will gripe and the Marine buddys will be in denial. I have a Navy buddy too, but he's too fat to fit any of the karts...lol.
Rules are as follows:
Making contact with a fence or vehicle will result in immediate expulsion from the property.
Hitting a tree will get you a beer, band-aid and a bill to replace the kart...threats may follow.
Feel free to make suggestions. Wife is deployed and does not know of my madness...shhhhhhh...it's for a good cause...BeerZ & KartZ

I'm also retired ARMY , thanking you guys for serving. :canada2:

I have many happy memories of this as a kid, mostly in the elementary school parking lots in the summer and on weekends. We had more kids than carts and helmets, all carts were mismatched HP wise. We used to have lap / change driver races to even things out. It depended how good you were at changing drivers and helmets if you could make up any time.

Woo hoo!

By "vehicle" I assume you don't mean other go-karts?
Because that's a necessary part of racin'...

Vehicles being my Dodge Viper and Wife's Pathfinder. I will have no more than $500 in each cart total...bang away.

It was a pleasure serving and thank you. I like slot cars. Might be the next thing I try...with beer

Lol, I like the idea though :rocker:

That is a great memory. Everyone will have the same underpowered, under-tired kart and aside from skill and body mass, it should be an even playing field...so I expect the Army guys to win ;)

One of the civilians at work (he is a former military brat, so I'm letting him in) has taken up the mantle for track design. I will check out ****'s and Amazon for reflective cones as well as those flags companies use when they survey your home for pipes and wires underground.

you should look up cyclekart racing, there's a group that DIY's these old school go karts with all the same Honda clone engine, single drive wheel, in vintage styled wooden bodies. they race them out in CA on dirt tracks like what you are wanting to do...there were also lots of posts over on the H.A.M.B. a few years ago...

Karts are the most bang for the buck racing around. We used to have a track you could rent out. We would get 3-5 buddies together and have a blast.
Watching your buddy spin out into the grass right in front of you never gets old

I will do that. Also need to figure out a way to mark the grass until all the guys get use to the course...and can use the cones as markers

I know right. It has to be fun and not too much work or we won't repeat it...and I want to make it a common occurrence.

You should make the navy guy ride a mini bike ( same 6hp motor). If you need a retired Coastie to add you your mix I'm in.

You are welcome here brother, bring some beer...for after.

Maybe I've had all the fun sucked out of me but I'd run it past your neighbors to the south. The carts are going to rip the **** out of your lawn and be loud and likely frequent.

Sounds to me like a pretty good way to piss off the neighbors. Especially since it doesn't look like a cheap neighborhood.

First off, i like your style. If I live anywhere near you I'd bring the beer, a kart, post race grilling meats, and more beer lol. Do it and take pics! As a vet myself (Army all the way) I know the need to blow off steam. This sounds like a killer way to do it. I like the revised version much better. But may I suggest some more challenges? Paintball guns?! [emoji1] BTW what was your mos/unit? MP? I like to get to know other vets I come across.

All those twists and turns are sure to keep speeds down unless you are putting a huge rear sprocket on your karts. The clutches will probably take a beating. Overall, I am sure a few track adjustments will be made after a few trial runs. Make sure to make it wide enough for safe passing. I think it's all really cool to do and should be a really fun time!

Most importantly...... I wish I was your neighbor! I'd be over helping out (with track setup and beer consumption) right now! :)

Sounds fun.
When I went back to college a few of us decided to build a kart for fun. Managed to get a donated frame from another college and a donated Honda clone generator for the engine. Not long after it was done the lads decided to take it to one of the lads homes and try it out. Unfortunately on the last run it suffered from brake fade causing the youngest to hit a tree and severely damage his shoulder. Don't think he'll ever have full mobility in that shoulder again. He said the ride was fun up until that point.

When I was in grad school at Texas A&M I taught math. I also taught police pursuit driving through a research project out at the old Bryan airfield. We had a 1 mile, 13 turn track that we used for the final day of the 5 day course. This was after a week of skid pad, off road recovery, offset alley, etc. It was a kick. It was also hell on cars. We went through a set of tires a week, a set of brakes every two weeks, and broke front wheels off on a regular basis, which was in turn hard on brake rotors and calipers. We finally had to start ordering NASCAR wheels. Anything approaching 1 minute on our track was fast in a police cruiser. You'll have a blast if nobody gets killed. Better put some roll cages on those things.

I like the revised track also, and agree on the roll cages. People do stupid stuff with the carts and you don't want any one to get hurt. Good luck and have fun. leave the beer for after the racing.
Track rule, no one can drive after drinking their first beer.

Sounds like a damned good way to have a good time. Color me jealous.

Paintball guns on mini-pintle mounts would kick ***.

I would consider your neighbors though.

Old tires painted make great course markers. Change the paint color to denote turns versus straights. Also I let the field grow tall the cut the track with the mower. If the turn was too tight after a couple laps it was good. Might want to look at an umbrella insurance policy just in case. Better to protect yourself than wish you had.
Looks like lots of fun.

This looks like fun We could argue that beer complicates things but sure tastes good. Also important-dont forget your brain buckets. You have a lot of inanimate objects in that course that don't flex too well

I only have 2 neighbors, Song a Korean Plumber and awesome guy to my right, he fires his AR15 all the time at rodents and I don't complain, so we are good. I even allowed (at his wife's request) that a Sand Crane be allowed to nest in the nethermost region of the yard. Neighbor on the right has had multiple pine trees fall in my yard damaging my fence and we dealt with it well, no charges, just fix the fence and we are good. His boys (5 of them) fire bottle rockets, .22 rifles and haul azz on their dirt bikes...we too have an understanding.

First off, i like your style. If I live anywhere near you I'd bring the beer, a kart, post race grilling meats, and more beer lol. Do it and take pics! Hoah, I was a 270A, Warrant Officer. Last duty station Was ARCENT, at Fort McPherson before it relocated to Shaw AFB, SC. The Paintball idea was tossed around until one of my marine buddy's insisted on freezing his paint balls to ensure realism...no.

I know my neighbor with the 5 boys will want "in" on this, but it's a vet thing so they can watch and count laps...unless he can get his brother in law who owns a gun shop to give me a great deal on a PS90 I have bee eyeing.

Sounds fun.

We are built to last here and have HumVee flips and caught shrapnel, and arrows to the knee...lol. It will take more than a tree to stop us...I hope.

I agree on the roll cage and despite already buying one kart sans cage, all future carts will be bought with a cage.

These guys are creatures of habit and huge fans of common sense. No drinking and driving, we haul azz, talk smack, hurl insults, grill and chill...and drink beer.

You are missing a key ingredient. Go karts, beer and PAINTBALL GUNS!

See earlier response. May have happened until talk of freezing paintballs came up...lol

Remember, the track completely changes if you reverse the flow. Qualifiers one direction, finals in the other.

That is frikkin brilliant. I like it. I also see way more crashes when my guys who memorized the one direction are forced to learn it the other way. Definitely no beers now.

Sounds like a damned good way to have a good time. Color me jealous.

Paintball guns on mini-pintle mounts would kick ***.

I would consider your neighbors though.

Better than the Tannerite suggestions my buds keep mentioning. My neighbors are understanding, based on my understanding their issues. I am zoned agricultural as well. One neighbor is on 10 acres the other like me is on 5 acres. They make way more noise than I ever will running these events every couple of months. I can't do it often anyway because it's hard to get all these guys together at once...and I really don't want to leave anyone out.

Old tires painted make great course markers. Change the paint color to denote turns versus straights. Also I let the field grow tall the cut the track with the mower. The umbrella policy and tires are both great ideas. I will look into that today.

This looks like fun We could argue that beer complicates things but sure tastes good. Also important-dont forget your brain buckets. You have a lot of inanimate objects in that course that don't flex too well

I have a few sport bikes thus a plethora of helmets of various sizes. Everybody gets a pair of gloves and a helmet, non-negotiable. I also have a chase vehicle with a water tank (my Zero turn with a Northern Tool water sprayer) and multiple fire extinguishers.

Tons of info on tracks and carts on this site:

Thanks brother. I will be reading this weekend.

http://www.grasspass.org

Why let the Marine drive? They usually walk everywhere or at least let him ride ***** with the Navy guy :D LMAO

I will definitely pass this quote on to those guys...they may insist on getting your home address though...lol:lol:

Shoulda kept the figure 8 detail from the first one :)

No worries brother. It will go through a ton of changes as we run over, run into and get banged up on various things.

This is the kart I got last night. I will paint it this weekend and I ordered a real muffler for too.

I hope so too lol.

In all fairness if it had been I suspect the tree would of come off worse than me. With my lard **** it wouldn't of been half as fast and Im a built a bit sturdier. The ladd riding it at the time was 17, scrawny and about 7 stone wet through.

Here's one question I have, have you talked to the neighbors about your idea? They can really take a good idea and either support it, or make your life a living hell and theirs.

Might be the Army in me, but I plan to trudge forward with this. If they don't like it, we can reach a compromise, maybe less laps or something.

Army Dog here myself... I would agree, save the beer for the celebration phase! You may find your stress level going down, but your hospital bills may go up. Sounds like a lot of fun, especially building a bitchin' go-kart. 11 year 11B, take care of yourself and help others....

I dig it man!

Take care,

Ron

I will as soon as I get some more carts. I mowed the yard pretty low to gauge the layout. It will be difficult navigating on slicks...lol. I used the golf cart and atv as a test bed and I can see everyone having a great time.

Figure out how to protect yourself (legally) if someone gets hurt. We got seriously sued once over a go kart incident. Otherwise, I wished I lived next door!
