Goalpost framing required?

I have come across that framing a “goal post” with 2x6s to mount a garage door to is common practice. My question is it required?

What’s the reasoning to add the goal post vs just mounting to the jack studs and header assuming they line up correctly? My bottom plate is 3” from the floor, I have 4.5” on either side of the door between the 2 jacks and stud, and a 16” header that goes all the way to the ceiling top plate.

Part of this is to save a little money on extra lumber, but mostly I’ve never liked the look of the goal post in a finished garage.

I’m still torn, but at the end of the day, I want the door to last so Im thinking I will goalpost it. I was thinking I could fill in the middle with some XPS foam then Sheetrock over the whole thing. I think having one big bump out will look better then having the exposed goalpost look.
