Going Rate for Gently Used Quality Toolbox? .50 on the Dollar?

Fellas -

I have a Craftsman Professional top and bottom box that I've outgrown.

They're 36" wide, 66.25" tall, and 21" deep. Sticker price on the bottom box is still there - $1299. I think the top box list price was $1049.

Boxes have some scratches, but generally good condition. All drawers move and close very nicely. Drawers all have liners. I have the keys to top and bottom.

I love this combo, but I've simply outgrown it. I have two Homak 72" boxes on order.

Anyway, I'm curious about the going rate on used toolboxes. I'd certainly be happy with 1/2 of what I paid for the combo, but that seems high to me.

Here are a few pics.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I have the same setup, only in red. Absolutely love it! I wouldn't take a penny less than a thousand dollars. I have next to two thousand dollars invested in mine. I'd hang hang on to it if it was me.

I strongly doubt anyone is going to pay .50 cents OTD for it when $1000-$1200 gets you so much in toolbox these days

I’d list it for oh, $700ish and see what happens. You can always lower the price.

Or you can keep it and get some trays to hold drill bits, taps, fasteners, fuses, orings, and so on to make it a consumables box.

I'd love to hang onto it, but I have absolutely no place to put it.

Thanks

Actually have a nice Durham cabinet on the way to hold hardware. http://www.durhammfg.com/item.html?id=921

Selling this will help pay for it.

Thanks

Agree, add in that while that is one of the nicer cman boxes, cman is not known as a top tier box to many. Single bank boxes are not very popular with pros, those that are really willing to spend on a box. Thus your market will likely be other home gamers, who typically take shiny new.

The front looks good, but the back has some heavy scratches as well as rust starting at the edges where paint is starting to lift.

In my area that set up would probably bring about $500 unfortunately. At $1200 people start justifying professional boxes or buying HF

Yeah, same in this area. About $500. You see people asking more for similar boxes, but they never sale.

If I were you, I'd hang onto it....

If it is a USA Waterloo produced product, I would keep it. The commercial grade boxes they re-badged for Craftsman are a beast.. Also, I favor the drawer heights in Your set.

I just sold my 40” Waterloo made craftsman set. New it cost me about $900 and was in very good shape. I listed it on CL for $400, nothing but lowballs of $200 or less. I ended up selling it to a buddy for $200 to get it out of my way.

Here in south Florida I think you would have a tough time selling that anywhere-near what you are contemplating. Even at Redneck Welder's price, which is apparently ~1/3 of retail, I think you're gonna find it a tough go. I think that's a place to start, though and you can always go lower if you really want to see it depart. Something is better-than nothing. I understand not wanting to part w/it for $300, but if you have no room for it, it's better-than having to set it outside and seeing it deteriorate, to sell it for whatever is the highest offer.

Here in the philly/baltimore/DC area you're looking at starting at $500, and taking less probably.

There are just too many Matco/Mac boxes and some basic older Snap-on boxes selling for less than $1,500 around here.

I sold the same set last summer in not quite as nice condition. It sat on Craigslist a long time at $200 before it finally sold.

Thanks for all the input. I posted it on Facebook, Craigslist, and NextDoor for $500. If it doesn't sell online, we have a neighborhood-wide garage sale this weekend and should have a lot of traffic.

I'll let y'all know what happens.

Test the waters at 900. You can always go down if you get a serious buyer.

Around here it wouldn't last a weekend at 500. At 200 it wouldn't last 20 minutes. Literally.

I disagree. I lived in Phx for 11 years, 2005-2016.

The garage sale might actually be better for you. When someone reads Craftsman box and sees yours it would be easy to quickly scroll by thinking it is one of the old standard ones that are 17" deep and 20" wide and keep going. but to see it in person would give it a better sense of scale. you might also include a pic of a common item in an open drawer, such as a coke can to give it a better perspective.

In my area boxes go for stupid prices, but I do agree with the $500.00 dollar price tag. Anything more and I start looking for a used tool truck box.

Not of the topic but this week we had a guy list his china junk craftsman table saw for $600.00 dollars on are local CL. So I emailed the guy and said look if I had 6 large bills I would want a monster saw not something made out of plastic and tin foil. The saw on a good day was worth $75.00 dollars and I told him that. I guess some guys never learn (but in his defense) he did listen and lower his price to $300.00 dollars.

Sigh... never going to get any takers at that price either.:wtf:

Fair enough. I've been flipping boxes pretty steady for the last several years and know a few others that do too. I can't believe what I'm seeing out here right now. Maybe it's tax refund money burning holes in everyone's pockets.

So what would be the going rate for used SO, Mac, Matco or Cornwell?
Thanks,
Griff

$400, someone got a good deal on that box. I understand wanting to move on and not deal with the tire kickers / flakes.

Yeah, I think so, too. But I was happy to have 4 Ben Franklins for it. And since $ burns a hole in my pocket, this afternoon I bought myself a welding table (2' x 4' with 5/8" top) and a Rock Island 574 with the proceeds.

I saw your ad right after you posted it but didn't see your location. Otherwise I would have tossed a number out there. But you posted it at about the top of the market here in Central Texas but you were ready to deal. Good on you and congrats on the new purchases! I know you know that without pics those didn't happen. Right? :lol_hitti

PS I'm just up the road in Austin.

Heck around here I'd have to sift through 100 requests to trade it for a speaker enclosure, radio out of their old '88 Cavalier, a weedwhacker that "used to run like a raped ape" but just needs a 50 cent part (but they don't have time to fix it themselves). :)
