Going rate for install

How much do HVAC techs generally charge in your area for an install?
I know prices will vary by region, etc, but I'm just looking for ideas.

I need to replace the entire unit in my house.
It's a small house, so it's only 3 tons, and I've already got a line on purchasing the equipment. I just need to find an installer but before I do, I'd like to have an idea what the going rate is.

Thanks in advance.

Lot of techs do not like to install equipment bought on line.
Plus, supposedly, you do not have a warranty when you buy on line.
Tread carefully with your project.
Usually, an installation by a tech has a labor and parts warranty.

Last year I had a new furnace and a/c unit complete with new duct work installed for $1500.00.

One of my good friends owns the company.

In round numbers, labor is the same as the parts. So if you paid $1500 for parts, expect $1500 for labor.

You may find a smaller local one man shop that will do the job, but I wouldn't expect more than a modest warranty on workmanship only.

You should be able to rent a vacuum pump and valve set for free from an automotive store. Might need to get some adapters for the valve set, not sure though.

Apparently you are not acquainted with a HVAC tech who will take on a weekend "side job".

If not, it's pretty easy to find one. Go to the local HVAC supply house and ask for a name/number of somebody that does side jobs, they'll know somebody.

Pricing varies greatly by local. I've heard pricing for installing a cased coil and compressor from $700 to over $2000. You need to really shop it, if price is all you're looking for.

I'll tell you this, do not hire a HACK! Installation can make or break your new HVAC equipment, so be very careful. Think about this for a min... If auto companies sent car parts, to the dealer for them to put together, how hard would you shop to make sure you got a good dealer versus just shopping price?

I appreciate the input fellas.
I've got a guy who is not a hack, and the price he gave me is in line with what you all are saying...basically what I paid for the whole unit.

HVAC is a closed business. DIY is HIGHLY frowned upon, so the DIY friendly vendors operate at the fringes. Unless you have a buddy who's an HVAC tech to help you you'll probably hit headwinds. That said, there are decent vendors out there who will sell equipment at wholesale pricing and you can install yourself if you know what you're doing or can get some help.
