I lost my large storage at my Dad's old house, we use to share a 40X60 now he has since sold the house and I need a place to store more cars at home (like to have them in my back yard anyhow, His house was about a mile away) So in the next few months I would like to plan a small expansion of the current garage that I have at home, It is currently a 26X26, you could almost put 3 cars in it said my side but that would be pushing it! I would like to add about 16 feet of depth to the north end of the garage towards the house, then knock out the old wall in between. So I would go from a 26X26 to a 26X41 or so. I could easily put the cars in 2 deep this way and the 2 cars that I need to store would be in the front of the garage that Hardly ever get driven, I will show a pic or to of my plan.

Please give me your input on this, every idea will be appreciated and thought about greatly!

Here is the north side of the garage, I have put out a string and stakes to use as measuring for planning.

P>S> I will do all the work my self, the floor and foundation will be done by a friend for a small cost to me.

Before you do anything check with your building inspector to see if your plan will be allowed. Sometimes they act like little Hitlers. Good luck.

Good luck, sounds like a great idea, if the local code allows for it. With that width you might be able to park 3 at 30-deree angle and one on the other side with a work area behind it (I live in the land of small cars, not sure what size yours are).

Like another poster said, go as far as you can. But, I would keep the wall up, and put a garage door on the end, in case you may want to heat it in the winter. It would make a nice work shop.

Thx everyone, I have been in contact with the city, I really can go as big as I want as long as I keep the garage 5 feet from the property line and 15 feet from the alley.
So saying that I CANNOT go wider, I have looked in to this as well, The cost would be almost the same price and could only gain one car storage. I didn't like that idea when I could spend $XXXX same and have room for 2 more not just one..

The room that I need to expand is to hold NONdaily drivers so the pain in the **** of moving one out to drive another is going to not be all that often.

I also have spoken to the neighbors on both sides, they said that they didnt care.

I know that Knocking the blocks out and taking the wall down wont be easy but the convenience of having the room to store 3-6 cars in the future will be worth it..

I like your idea of adding depth. My garage (30x40) is similar in size to your plan. I park 5 vehicles and sometimes 6, in the manner you are proposing. I keep the daily drivers in the front 3 bays and keep my Corvette and full size pick-up in the back. Its no big deal to get one out when I want. I'd go minimum of 40' and 45' if possible if I were you.

Not if the buyer wants a big shop...:lol_hitti

But you narrow the market considerably. Pleas dont get me wrong, I love BIG shops, but I have also sold property with a large shop and at that time (1994) most buyers viewed the large shop as a hinderance

That might be changing now. Did anyone see/read the article in the USAToday (I think it was Tuesday) about garages. The article was called "Garages motor to new heights
Bigger, bolder and better for male bonding"

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/USAToda...rtpage=D.1&desc=Garages+motor+to+new+heights+

It was more or less about how much more in-demand larger garages are becoming and how the sizes are increasing along with the sizes of homes.

I am about through with my garage additon (31x54). This was a new structure but it had to be attached to the house for permit purposes. It is big enough for 4 cars with their doors all open. I have had a great time building it. Good luck. This is the best site going for garage lovers.
