Going to the Hood for a Toolbox

Saw a CL ad and saw a full sized Craftsman box (Top and bottom) full of tools... $250....

Emailed and called the owner. I was the first one who said they would come out (1st clue?)

It was a 45 minute drive away and I am new to the area.... So, what the heck...

I get off the exit and wow.... Like a Youtube video of Detroit.... Saw 2 crackheads and a possible meth user within 2 minutes....

I started asking myself, is this really worth it? which I just overrode quickly with thoughts of a good deal...

Had to drive about 2 miles through an area with broken down factories, houses with boarded up windows and people who stared at you as if you were insane to be there....

When I got to the house the owner was waiting for me...

She had kids around her so I was put a bit at ease...

Next she says, the toolbox is in the basement and the fuse is burned out so there is very little light...... (All I could think of at that time was remembering the movie LETHAL WEAPON II when the guy walked into the room with drop cloths on the floor and over the furniture)

But the kids ran down the stairs and were around (I figured if someone was going to rob me, they wouldn't have their 3 and 4 year old kids around)

I opened the top box (Which she did not know how to open) and she said (Oh, be careful, there may be some weed in there)... Not being a newbie to accidentally buying weed when buying a toolbox, I determined that there was no weed.(Thread: Accidentally buying weed left in a toolbox)

Ended up making a damm good deal for $200 bucks.... Pics will be forthcoming. Unused Snap on Wrenches, A Snap on PT100 and several snap on sockets were within.

The hardest part was that I had to lug the toolbox up the stairs myself (She was in no physical condition to help).

I had to park my truck in the yard to get it close to the side of the house where the stairs were... This was obviously no problem in this neighborhood.

As I loaded it up, I just wanted to get out of that neighborhood. It was one of those "hair on your neck standing up things" ... Once I hit the on ramp I knew I was good to go..

Got my excitement in for the night.

Just think of it as an adventure, and then wonder who the unlucky guy is that his ex sold his tools for dirt cheap!

I've gotten off at some pretty bad exits in Indiana to get gas before. Learned my lesson and try to stop at the service centers and truck stops. Gives you a nice feeling when you stop at a gas station with bars on the windows and spray paint all over and people standing all around looking at you. I just put 10 bucks in and got out as fast as I could!

Poor kids don't get to drive away. That always makes me a little sad.

BWP thank you for your service, men and women like you allow all of us to be safer. The post does come off a bit quixotically eliteist at first read and it doesn't sound like MikeV was attacking the poster but the stereotype that was portrayed within it. Good score!

The killer deal sometimes trumps judgement! :spit:

Or the basement of the pawnshop in Pulp Fiction...:shocking:

That's what this thread reminded me of! :lol_hitti

Nice, looking forward to the pics. I'm still trying to find that killer deal with Snap on tools. Got some great deals on SO toolboxes, but never tools.

Nothing like a good trip to a sketchy area to pick up a good deal and get outta Dodge before it gets dark to get the adrenalin pumping! :pimpflash

I have been on plenty of convoys and patrols in Iraq and Afghanistan... I have learned to understand the Hair on the neck feeling. So you can shut the F up about leaving the burbs.

No offense meant, but after reading those two posts, I got tears running down my face. Not sure why they struck me so funny. Maybe it's the heat.

LMAO! I've seen lots of deals on craigslist somewhat similar to this one that are coincidentally in south central los angeles. Usually they involve steeply discounted used snapon tool boxes with broken locks and no, I'm not kidding.

That area ain't nothin' compared to Detroit.

I've driven through central america and back, across sketchy borders and through hillside favelas, on jungle roads in bandit territory, but nothing scared me like Detroit.

quote "Gives you a nice feeling when you stop at a gas station with bars on the windows and spray paint all over and people standing all around looking at you. I just put 10 bucks in and got out as fast as I could!"
Yup, that was me, lost and out of gas in Detroit one time! I will *NEVER* forget that experience.

When You do auto repair and own a wrecker you get to go in every type of neighborhood. I know what you mean about that feeling and I got it in several differant type of neighborhoods. I carried a weapon on me on all calls for the last 15 years. the only time I had to pull it was when two Pit Bulls decided I looked like a buffet. After shooting both dogs I thought I was going to have to shoot the owner of the Cujo twins. The guy that owned them had about 10 violations considering the attitude of the 30 somthing Pit bulls he had behind his house.

I think it didn't worry me as much going into the getto than into the deliverance areas. At least in the getto they just leave your body in the road instead of feeding you to the gators

Man... there's never any weed in the tool boxes I buy... usually just a bunch of crappy Snap-on screwdrivers. Some guys have all the luck.

reminds me of a time when I took a wrong turn in a very bad part of Memphis at a very bad time (around 1 am).

It is never a good thing when you are walking along and hear "uh oh, I see white people, I see white people, you in trouble now"

Good story, gald it worked out for you.

I had something happen to me just like that. Found a SO toolbox for $120.00 on CL, it was in the bad part of town. I was by myself when I stopped by the house that had the SO box. The guy came over to my car window and said the box is in the basement. There were two rather large guy's sitting on the steps outside the house, they were not dressed for the office. The guy said common downstairs to have a look. I then pretended that my phone rang to stall for time. He walked back to the front of the house then I left in a hurry down the road. It just did not feel right, I think I made a wise choice at the time.

Thanks for posting this. It reminded me of some of the adventures I went on when I was younger going into New Orleans to track down some good deal on old Mopar parts. There was a nasty grocery store in a nasty neighborhood but the dark, dirty warehouse was full of pallet racks just loaded with vintage Mopar muscle car parts. Of course, I always had some protection with me.

Thank God for decent people and suburbs.

So was this in Detroit? I thought New Orleans was the nastiest city in the country until the time I drove through Detroit. I was taking a shortcut through town to cross some bridge into Canada, as I had never been to a foreign country. The only business still open were liquor stores, tattoo parlors, and churches. Detroit is the most depressing, run down, disgusting place I have ever been to. I'm glad everything worked out for you. Good luck in getting the smell off of the tools and box.

Also, what exactly did you mean when you said she was in no condition to help you?

Has anybody ever driven through Baltimore? They have blue lights up on poles to signify all the high crime areas. So if you drive into an area with the blue light, it's time to go. Nice feature If you ask me. I think they say "believe" on them which is kind of odd though.

I never minded driving though Atlanta but I'm not real found of East St. Louis.

I got off the wrong exit in Baltimore one evening while riding my motorcycle. I took one look at the neighborhood, and immediately turned around and drove the wrong way back up the off ramp. I grew up in Philly and can tell a good neighborhood from a bad one. That exit in Baltimore had to be the worst neighborhood I've ever seen.{besides my half hour off the cruise ship in Jamaica}

Lets see some pics of the box.

Every time I go on a craigslist deal I always carry a firearm in case I have to pop a cap in someones *** and drive my old beatup truck so I can try to blend into the trash. I have heard plenty of craigslist robberies and even a couple rapes and killings so you have to be careful when going into the low income areas where all that stuff takes place.

Lets see the pics.

To answer a few questions:

I do not believe it was stolen, if I thought it was I would not have bought it... life is too short.

The reason the woman could not help me was because her Body fat was probably 60%

The location was Louisville.

I have a concealed carry permit, but was not carrying.

Here are some pics:

I think so too. Could've been completely harmless, but you have to listen to your gut in those situations. :shocking:
