How many of the car companies used to give out those "gold" plated tool sets after completing or participating in some type of training program? What was the "gold" plating actually made out of?

Was there was particular manufacturer of the tools, or did it vary depending on the lowest bid that year?

Interesting. Krusty, do you know what the faux "gold" plating actually was?

And, did most guys actually use these tools, or set them aside as trophies to look at?

My wife got a Snap On ratcheting hard handle as a 5 star dealer bonus working at a Dodge dealer. She had a choice of what she could get and I told her to get the SO ratcheting screwdriver. It has SO on one side and the other says 5 star on it. I lost it recently but if I find it I'll post a picture. Honda never gave as **** except this one time when I got a crappy chinese dial indicator to measure scratches on CNG fuel tanks and a bottle of leak detection fluid when I completed the CNG training. Funny all Honda special tools for measurement were nice until they handed them out to techs and then they got cheap. When I worked for Saturn for a short time I got a window regulator tool made by OTC for removing them. It looks like a smaller brake piston tool.

I've gotten a few gold tools through the years, they aren't always 'tools' though. The last one I got (last year) was a Carhartt jacket with the Master Tech logo on it.

In the late '90s, there was a multitool that I got; one of the Snap On mini boxes; in around '02 I got a Snappy multimeter; I got a 6 cell mag lite; one year I opted to get a Snap On pistol grip pliers. I also have a Snappy electronics screwdriver set. I could probably dig a few of these up. Loaned the meter to my Dad and never saw it again, I'd sure like to have it back.

Stand by. I can dig up everything I've got except the meter. I'll try to get pics up tomorrow.

I have some-actually a lot of the Chrysler MTSC tools-here is a pic of 2 "GOLD" plated-micrometers. They are not really gold I found out after trying to turn them into "Cash into Gold"-bummer!

I have done time with most of the major brands. (except Honda) Chrysler was the only one that actually awarded a trophy for advancement.

G.M. tried a really weak program, that involved a "single" Goodwrench branded wrench.(not available to the public at the time) It was short lived, to say the least.

Toyota offers a point program,(with certification levels) that you can exchange for premiums. SnapOn gift certificates, small appliances, blah blah.

I have been with Ford for about 7 months, so any rewards/awards programs are still unknown at this point. When I was doing Ford back in the 80's, they had parts and service "MVP Rallies". It was a night of food, drink, and a plethora of give-aways. Those were the days

ford now uses a points system for reaching master/senior master. the point's can be used to buy rotunda tools or clothing.

man, i remember those MVP rally's..........a cardinal game and lot's of beer:beer:

they used to give things like thermos's and pocket knives for completing CTP booklets as well.
