Gold Rush - Dozer Wars.

I watched it today. At one point they bring in mechanics to fix a D9 Cat.
They need to remove a 10" long bolt, and it breaks off. So the guy drilled
a hole, heated it up with an OA torch. Then welded a bolt to it and was
able to turn it out. Good skills there.

How is it that every idiot you wouldn't hire to do work on one of your own jobs ends up with a TV show? :dunno:

I saw that too, looked like a very clever fix. He said the hole all the way through was so he could force penetrating fluid up behind it. Then he shaped the front of a smaller bolt and welded it to the busted off piece - and as you said, spun it off.

A lot better than that cry baby they had before. All that guy ever did was say he couldny do it or it was going to take weeks.

Did you notice he was using a Pittsburgh impact socket?

Also, that bold was cracked for a long time. They briefly showed the broken bolt and the fracture was full of rust.

Whatever they are paying him it was worth double for that fix...

Did a fix like that in 96 on a Digger Derrick Turret with 7 bolts broke, as luck would have it my rep from our welding supplyer was there and he gave me some rod from MG. Bolts were vertical and I put the rod down the center of the hole and pushed the rod in, not working it at all just straight up thru a washer and nut, when thru the nut started working the rod. Hit it with a inpact and out it came. Got 2 packs of rod (2 lb ea) and 3 hrs later all the bolts were out. The boss yelled at me for buying the rod, didn't want to hear that I had saved at least 3 days labor taking the turret off and drilling them out. If that was on TV I would of got a Emmy, as it was I felt like I got a Enema.

Fred has some pretty good fabricating skills. He can get them out of a jamb but not properly repairing his temp. fixes while he has time to get the parts in may bite him in the azz.

That kid really made it look easy on a big *** bolt like that, I also wonder how the weld splatter did not booger up those threads, I would of liked to see how long it took him to drill through the bolt

Totally noticed the Pittsburgh Pro Impact Socket as well. That gave me a good chuckle. Shows that they are tough as nails as well.
