Need a recomendation for a good solid axe. I want something thats going to last and will hold and edge. Not interested in any of those hipster botique axes either. Just something thats super solid and will last for daily use in the forest.

Hard to find handles these days. Even harder to find the hardwood and steel wedges to hold the head on !

My local True Value has a ton of handles, I re-handle everything I can. Even the made in China shovels, usually one re-handle (kept oiled) is all we get before the spade is heart shaped in the wrong direction.

A well cared for handle can last a VERY long time.

I love my Gransfor Bruks. I hear good things about Autine as we'll. Council Tool Hudson Bay looks nice with the polish.

Hit some garage sales/estate sales and buy an old USA made axe. There are alot of good Plumb, Collins and Kelly axes out there to be had for a cool $5.
Better than most anything new you can buy today. And if your lucky you will come across a Rixford but not likely in the PNW.

Gransfors Bruks if you can stomach the price.
I have the small forest axe and it is just awesome for canoe trips.
I also have the mini-hatchet that kinda looks like a toy but is awesome for getting a fire going when backpacking if you know how to properly use it.

Been through a number of them. I ended up for good with a Fiskar's.

I see and have purchased wood handles for my other axe heads in a number of places. Various hardware and big-box stores.

Never heard of Rixford. How does it compare to Collins and Kelly?

Sorry, what does it mean PNW?
Thanks

PNW= Pacific Northwest.
I've never heard of Rixford either.
OP didn't really specify use of said axe, but guessing for something along the lines of a "Boy's or Boyscout" axe, something around a 2.5lb head and 24" handle. More of a long hatchet. I'd agree with others and look for used. Something that will accept a wood handle, although I've got a couple Fiskar pieces and they're surprisingly good, but I don't have a need to use them hard.

You can find Plumbs all over ebay for cheap enough. You can find handles and wedges at non-borgs, or even ebay. I have a double bit Plumb axe and a TG hatchet. If I was to buy new I'd go for Husqvarna or Council Tool. Youtuber Wranglerstar gives a good review of Marbles hatchets.

Old US made head, rehafted on a House Handles octagon handle, sharpened to shaving sharp, and handle soaked in boiled linseed oil. That'll perform as good or better than anything you can buy.

Gransfor Bruks, Hultafors, Husquavarna,Wetterlings and Fiskars. Take your pick

+473 Contrary to what a hipster selling axes online has to say, there are many newly made axes these days that are not made of pot metal.

What do hipsters use Baxes for anyways? I mean I'm a lumbersexual so it's ok if I have one. I fell at least one mature hardwood per year.

I pick up Plumb in good condition all the time at garage sales for $5-$7. You can still source good american hickory handles online - don't go to Home Depot, etc.

Council Tool... Used them in the Fire Department for years. Also look at Iowa American and Leatherhead tools. Pricey but will last the average guy a lifetime. Might want to stop by your local Fire Department and ask if they are going to surplus any... get 'em for about $5.
