I don't have a pair, and might need to get one so I don't wind up with a mullet by the time all this is over... ;)

Isn't the person that going to do the cutting experienced enough to have an opinion? If the answer is no, you'll probably get better results with an home hair clipper set with attachable guide combs. Something like this. Not a recommendation for this particular product - though it's what I (single and bald) use.

I don't know how anyone would plan to use barber's shears on themselves. Go with the clipper with a comb attachment on it. Or find a Flowbee at a garage sale.

I've purchased professional shears on ebay on the cheap for a stylist friend. Forged Hitachi steel convex edge shears will easily run you over $200 new, and they come in many varieties, so it's not a one size fits all. There's straight, semi and full offset, twisted thumb, swivel thumb, and different lengths of each, all with or without finger rests.

Flowbee! They still make it and it's awesome. Comes with various length guides including tapered. No mess and you literally cannot screw up, just move in upward / downward motions. I bought it to cut my boys' hair when they were little but I use it on myself and still on them now that they're older. We all have that basic longer on top than sides than back taper cut. Same as you would do with scissors and hair clippers.
