Good Basic Paint Gun with Disposable Cups

I have an old HF gun that I have used for primer for years that is starting to do a poor job.

I have a jeep I am updating that I ideally want to paint myself, and Id like to upgrade to a little better paint gun that can potentially do both primer and finish paint. It's a jeep and not a show car, but I'd like it to look like I didn't paint it. I also would like to use a disposable cup system.

Any recommendations on reasonable guns? Ive heard of 3M PPS and Dekups....any recommendation on which is better?

I own a few Devilbiss Starting Line guns and they work pretty well. Ive had them for at least 5 years. I also have two of the detail guns that I use for spraying SEM interior paint.

I think the acuspray plastic garbage is one of worse guns out there. I returned both I had.

This gun has good reviews and is supposed to be able to do it all. It's the next gun I'm buying.

On a scale of 1-100 I give Spray Guns Direct 200! They were beyond FANTASTIC to work with. In a pinch I was able to get 2 higher end guns in under 24 hours to my door at a fraction of the cost of anywhere in the states.

The Shipping was like 34.00 I had them in hand before I had other places in the states even return my calls. Summit Racing and other local paint stores were a few days out to get. 7 Hours after my order it had already landed in Ohio from across the pond. They gotta be 3 steps from the Airport.

I do have well over a Dozen Spray guns of most brands. I always go back to DevilBiss.. Kinda like Ford, Chevy Dodge tho different people like different guns.

I always have used the 3m setup. They just came out with a new setup again recently which I have not tried.

All are good until you pour the paint in cup then realize you forgot the liner!

I have an Eastwood Concours Pro that has worked well for me and I'm far from an accomplished painter. I added the Devilbis DeKups adapter right out of the gate.

Your HF gun served you well...why not spend another $9 on one?

I always have 1 in the box, 1 for spraying finish coat, 1 for primer and one for spraying used motor oil. They move down the line of inportance until there junk.

I also have a nico (i think) but it dosnt spray as good.

I use the Devilbiss Finish line guns for primer and base. They are very good for the hobbyist in my opinion. I used to use the cheaper stuff from HF and I noticed it is way easier to get a glass smooth finish with the finish line.

I think you'll find the DeVilbiss GPI isn't available from US sellers as it isn't a US market gun. If you want it, you'd need to get it from spraygunsdirect in the UK as linked above.

Gunman on youtube rates the GPI as #2 in his top 10 spray guns. IMO, he has the most extensive and most objective spray gun reviews of anyone on youtube.

Another gun highly rated by Gunman is the DeVilbiss FLG5, also available from the same UK source as its also a non-US market gun. Another good choice for someone whose budget is a bit tighter than the price of the GPI.

Another good gun that's reasonable is the Iwata W-400 Bellaria. $180 on ebay without a cup. Plastic cups are widely available for around $10 each. HF has some cheaper plastic cups that do fit Iwata guns, but they're junk.

FWIW, none of the above guns are HVLP. They're all referred to as "RP" or "compliant" or "high transfer efficiency" guns. They typically operate at about 10 cfm and pressures from 20 to 30 psi. Most painters who have used both HVLP and RP guns prefer the RP due to the fact that the HVLP's tend to be air hogs and also tend to produce more orange peel as compared to RP guns when spraying clears or single stage urethane paints.

Personally, I don't see the cost benefit of either of the disposable cup liner systems for the casual or DIY painter. Any gun, from a $9 HF to a $1200 Sata, has to be kept meticulously clean to avoid problems. The cup is by far the simplest and easiest thing to clean, and that's the only component affected by disposable liners. Might save you a minute at most, and a dime's worth of thinner (assuming the person isn't using $60/gal urethane grade reducer for gun cleaning. At $2 or more each for either of the disposables, they ain't worth my money. Might be different for a production paint and body shop though.

I have this set, with a 3M PPS kit on it. They make the adapters for the harbor freight guns.

I have had it completely apart. It is made well. I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL. I have sprayed Laquer, Enamel, Epoxy for woods and metals. It performs well. My only complaint is the 1.8 tip is not big enough for heavier primers. I am debating drilling it out....

Harbor Freight guns are cheap at $9.00 on sale. I've been painting with them for a decade for my projects, car fenders, primer, etc. I clean them up with lacquer thinner and gas. After a couple of years, I toss them and get a new one. I usually have a couple of new ones on hand. Just painted some motorcycle parts yesterday.
