good bench grinder for home use

what is a good one to get it will be used for the home shop i am looking at the Dayton and deltas and they are right about the same price as DE Walt and i figured DE Walt would be the cheaper one all opinions greatly appreciated and my budget is around a $100.00 if possible thanks

i can go a little more the grinder i just got rid of was a DE Walt and it cost me $48.00 new what has happened to the grinder prices are the grinders made out of gold now days and good grinders are hard to find on cl in the fort worth area

All things being equal, go for amps!! You need lots of amps especially if you plan to ever use a wire wheel.

Ignore HP ratings because they all lie.

Some of the highest amps are offered in the older CM block grinders and Jet.

IMHO you should have at least 4+ amps at 6" and around 8 amps at 8".

Second Dave's post, amps are the important criteria. Just about all manufacturers are using hyped (mis meaured such as peak hp) hp power ratings.

Kinda spendy in my book for small block. $75 maybe and that's consideing the stand I'd have to modify.

Your Matco grinder looks to be made by Wissota, and it's a great machine. That would be an excellent score for $100 or less.

Pappy bought it brand new off the truck. Never really used as a week later he found a new in the box, never opened 70's 1 hp craftsman block with factory stand for $80. Thats why I think the above block for $125 is high.

Bench Grinders under $100 can be low powered you can go for second hand from your local market that's what i recommend first before buying a new one..you can test the old ones from the reseller too and can get a beast of grinder under $100 if you are lucky but can do the job.

A light weight grinder will be more susceptible to vibration if the wheels are not perfect. Of the three brands mentioned, the only one I would buy is the Dayton. I'll admit though, I've never played with a Dewalt. I had a Delta 8" for a while. It was OK but nothing special. I sold it very quickly after I stumbled on a Wissota 7". Make sure you have a way to true the wheels and keep them that way. Diamond dressers have become really reasonable and my preference over the traditional wheel type.

bolted down to a stand the blocks do fine although I must say 8" wire wheels sound like a freight train. Smaller wheels are no problem. I agree though, cast iron weight is something worth looking for... My Baldor is by far the favorite next to the cast iron pre-block.

Someday I will find a walker turner or delta to try out, I'm sure they are great as well, but difficult to find a deal on.

I should have been more clear about the Delta. It was the same model that is currently sold. I now have a Rockwell Delta that I love. I believe it was made by Marathon.
