I'm looking at a used Quincy QR25 5hp (325) 80 gallon compressor. Looks to be in very good condition for $1000 (talked down). Is this a good deal?

It's not a great deal but you already know what that compressor is. I am partial to them myself (have one in my garage). Does this one have the spin on oil filter option? If yes, I would probably buy it if in good shape but I would check one thing. Turn the compressor off and drain all of the air out of the tank and then turn the compressor back on. If you hear a loud knock that goes away after a little pressure has built up, the rod bearing or wrist pin is worn.

For some reason, the only time I have heard that knock is under no pressure on an empty tank. If you hear it, it will take a rebuild to fix and will lower the price quite a bit.

I will check this while I go back to look at it, thanks. Yes, it does have the spin on oil filter.

More info...it was a "back up" compressor for since 1995 until 2010. It hasn't been on since, but has had the delaer do a PM on it. They replaced one valve and an unloader, changed the oil and filter.

Generally you can tell a good bit from the paint condition of the unit, if it has the original paint; check the tank date, visual inspection through the large ports would be best; if the unit has been repainted, there is generally something to hide. If it was a backup compressor, rarely used I would definitely pay a grand for it if it is the same power requirement as you have; would I trust what a(ny) dealer tells me, never.

Around here, that price would be high, but Quincy’s are hard to find used. I bought mine for $400 but it had some damage and it took $100 in parts to make functional. I was very sad when mine burned to a crisp, but life goes on. Whatever you spend on a compressor plan on spending at least a $100 more for a regulator and filter.

If it has a spin on oil filter and is in good shape, I would probably buy it at that price. You will never need another compressor unless you have a problem like fflintstone..
