Good deal? Mac box

A friend of a friend has what he's calling a Mac MB-7100/7200 top/bottom set for sale. I haven't gotten a chance to look at it in person but he says the whole unit is 58" tall (excluding the 6" wheels), 20" deep and 36" wide. From the pictures I've seen it appears to be in fairly good condition. He's asking $1000, is this a good deal?

I tried to find info on this box on the mac website but this model doesn't come up even though the boxes have a 7100 and 7200 emblem on the front. This box would just be for home/garage use as I've far outgrown the tabletop box I've got. I've also had my eye's on the similar sized (36" wide) Menard's Masterforce box that's on sale for $550. I typically try to buy things a little larger/better than I probably need so I can grow into them and use them forever.

I've been searching on Craigslist for around a year now and haven't had any luck in the used market there either. Seems like everyone wants 60-70% new retail price for their used boxes nowadays regardless of the condition.

if the box is in great condition then it would be worth it!

It's a good box but 1000 dollars is steep for that box. keep in mind it is a flat top box (no top compartment) so it just drawers. They were very nice when equipted with the optional side lockers.

I liked the looks of those, I'd buy a set for at home if I could find some nearby that was priced reasonably.

That is a decent box. The Masterforce box is a good unit, too, but not the same quality as a Mac. The condition means everything in such a purchase. If the Mac is very well cared for, you may find more value in it. Depending on your height, the lack of a top compartment may not be at all negative.

You'd need to be pretty tall to see in a top til that high up anyway. I bought one of those new in 1996 or 7. Great box. The predecessor of the Macsimiser. In good shape, I'd have no problems giving a grand for that one. JMO.

FYI there were also both short and tall lockers specific to those series of boxes.

I'm 6'2" so seeing into the top shouldn't be much of a problem. Does anybody happen to know if this unit has roller bearing or friction slides? The guy I talked to didn't know offhand.

Ball bearing with detents to help keep the drawers closed when unlocked. The bottom drawer should have 2 sets also.

Did he tell you about the writing tray?
