Hey guys, so i came across this, and before i jumped on it, thought i would see what you guys thought.

So it's a 120 gallon Saylor Beal compressor, it comes with two motors, however it only has 1 pump. It still produces approx. 23 scfm at 90 psi...with the other pump connected, it apparently produces 40 scfm with both connected...or so i was told.

Anyways, the compressor runs and is fully functional.

It's going to cost me $400, and a few hours drive.

What do you guys think?

fair deal for what it is. The extra motor is basically dead weight to you and new pumps cost a small fortune so i wouldnt bank on that becoming a reality. Thats a huge tank, hope you'll have help.

Hey guys...soo another question...i was looking into the 3 phase power...this house when we bought it...came with a built in variable frequency drive in the garage...however it is rated for 5 hp...now here is where it gets a bit tricky...for me at least...

The compressor comes with two 5 hp baldor motors...however as noted earlier, only one is connected, since there is only 1 pump...soo i am wondering if my vfd will be ok with running the 1 motor?

Also i was wondering ...for the future, should i get the other pump...does the hp work cumulatively...as in two 5 hp motors...therefore 10hp...as a result i would need a 10hp vfd...or does it work in the sense that i have two 5 hp motors...therefore the 5hp vfd is fine, since it matches the motor with the greatest hp...5 hp

:S ....just wondering...

They run together, you woud need twice as much electricity so no you wouldnt be able to do it without a larger VFD.

Similarly you'll want to check the output of your current VFD and make sure it will actually supply a healthy amount of power to the motor. There is a process to sizing a VFD to a particular job and since you're saying its 5HP to 5HP that probably leaves very little margine for error.

oh ok, i see, so you think to run even the single motor, the current VFD would be too small?

What do you know/would you recommend a static phase converter? I guess maybe 10 hp...or should i go a little over that amount?

your current VFD may be fine, i dont know and am absolutely not a person to ask i just know that any of the converters need a margine for error for their real output capability. For what its worth VFDs are suppose to be extremely efficient.

The main concern will be if the VFD can supply enough power to feed the motors start-up load.

I dont know a lot about VFDs but one guy I talked to that dealt with them suggested always upsizing the VFD if it is for a compressor. IE. use a 15hp vfd on a 10hp motor. His theory was that compressor will run virtually full draw for extended periods of time pumping air, vs something like a lathe or mill that would only draw a fraction of full load amps unless you were making VERY heavy cuts, and even then it would be for a short period of time.

I assume he was suggesting it to reduce the load on the VFD and extend its life. Makes some sense to me.

There is a guy on kijiji located in kitchener or waterloo that sells used refurbished VFDs for a good price. My friend bought one from him to run a 10hp compressor.

I'll certainly look into it. I asked around, and come across static phase converters as well...so i will look into all the possibilities. Does anyone have any experience with static phase converters?
