Been trying to tidy up/fix some of the ductwork that was previously installed. It seems my "Ducktape" duct tape is no good at all. It has peeled off in places and not stuck well overall. Even some of the stuff the installed used seems to be peeling off itself.

I am looking for a quality duct tape that sticks well to duct work and lumber. See pictures below.

Shurtape duct tape. That's the brand used by hvac contractors who don't cut corners in their work. Should be available at most any local hvac supply house in both 2" and 3" widths.

Remember the rule.....if duct tape doesn’t work, you’re not using enough duct tape.

Gorillia duct tape works well... but for actual ducts... I think they have those aluminum foil type.. and it looks like you needed to clean your surface first. For the aluminum ones there are different grade/rating..

Use the aluminum foil tape for duct seams. Or use a brush on mastic. As for the quality of the foil tape, I’ve used it on some 20” duct on our exhausts at my work. Been out in the rain for three years now and hasn’t peeled off.

this x3.

Gorilla is some heavy duty sh*t.

I only use aluminum foil tape on ductwork due to the heat,

and definitely need to degrease the ductwork prior to any taping.

Foil tape or mastic for ducts....... Do it right with the approved materials.
Using duct tape on HVAC ducts is a code violation..... Code states the product must be listed for sealing duct work.
Look at any duct system that is over 20 years old and you will see that the old style duct tape has deteriorated and where it was used there is leakage.

BTW! I like Gorilla Tape but NOT for use on duct work or bathroom vents.

Aircraft have been flown after being repaired with duct tape, maybe it didn't pass inspection but the inspection was after the plane was back at home field.

I'm a HUGE fan of Polyken tapes - where others have failed, they do the job, from surgical closures to Gaffers tape (which I now use in place of Duct Tape)... not cheap, but it works 100x better than most anythnig else. I don't know if they have an aluminum foil Duct sealing tape (I'd be surprised if they DON'T), but if they do, that's what I'd use.

"Duck tape" is NOT rated for use on "ducts".

Yeah, I know.

Foil HVAC tape is what you NEED to use.

Such as:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Shurtape-1-88-in-x-10-yds-Aluminum-Foil-Repair-Tape-241588/301296783

Or this:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Nashua-Tape-1-89-in-x-33-9-yd-Foil-Mastic-Sealant-Tape-1461664/302091382

Or this:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Nashua-...um-Foil-UL-Listed-HVAC-Tape-1207794/100048600

Or buckets of HVAC mastic.

If is 'cloth' tape with the reinforcing fibers/strings in it, it is NOT actual "duct tape".

Duck tape is NOT "duct tape".

"Duct" tape was not invented or intended for ductwork, and was not originally called "duct" tape. It was invented for sealing ammo boxes. It was called "duck" tape because it was based on duck cloth and for its water resistance.

Shurtape and Duck (a Shurtape brand) both make UL listed and labelled fabric backed duct tape approved for sealing ductwork, so claims that aluminum foil is the only code approved tape are false.

for duct work you have to use the foil tape, not duct tape. remove the tape, clean up the surface, then apply the correct tape (foil tape). it usually has a peel sticky side to it. as you unroll it you can tear/cut off a length then peel off the paper and stick it to the duct. then I use an old hotel card key and press it into place. want to make sure it is pressed on good and sticks well. they also make tools/squeegee or hand applicators for this.

saw this youtube....
Duct Tape is not for Air Ducts

You need the aluminum based tape applied to a clean surface. Code.

When I was younger the submarine builder where a lot of my friends worked had their own style of duct tape it was green and called "EB Green" by anyone familiar with it. I have seen people do bodywork on cars with it, it was amazing. 30 years ago I was gifted 12 rolls by my ex FIL, I used the last one a year ago...Gorilla is good but it is not EB Green

For starters the surface must be free of oil and dust, since ac was my line work I also purchase Nashua 357 which will cost little more but worth it.
