Hey all can anyone recommend a good reasonable electrician who services the Clinton nj area? My wife and I have been in our new place about a month and I've found some interesting electrical issues. Several outlets and switches appear to be wired improperly and have too many lines in their boxes.

I also need to see about having some more circuits run eventually as well as a couple more outlets on a new circuit in the garage, mainly two 30a circuits for my compressor and welder.

I'm trying to find someone local who won't **** around and will work with us

If you have met any of your neighbors, and are on friendly terms with them, ask them if they have had to do any electrical work and who they used.

There might be a guy right in your neighborhood who is good.

Also, Google "Electricians" in your area, and see if you find any that have reviews of their work, and how people feel about the job they did.

It's a start anyway. The best resource for your area are the people who live there!!

I've done plenty of electrical but this seems like it might need an actual electrician to figure out. Box is over loaded and the outlet and switch are crammed with wires

Its good you want to sorr this out
Too many people these days dont want to pay for professionals, and sending a 3yr year to do a service call is not considered professional

still havent gotten this wiring sorted out. havent had an electrician actually show up yet. i do want and need to get it sorted out, and really i want to move the light switch to next to the garage door, instead of 10ft from it. im considering terminating the whole box and having access from inside the garage anyway.

it makes no sense where it is now, but the hallway its in used to be inside the garage until a remodel long before we got the house. what gets me as well is it appears to be 10g wiring for the most part, its heavy and very stiff.

eventually i'll need to upgrade the service and main panel to add other circuits to the house and garage just need to make things safe for now

so need some more help here. look at the attached picture. this is a double switch that controls an attic fan. its a two speed fan, one switch turns it on, the other turns it on high. i need to replace this switch(s) and have some questions about the wiring. on the old switch all 3 lines are connected to one side of the switch, 2 blacks and a red wire. how should i attach the new switch that is set up a little differently, are the two black wires supposed to be pigtailed together?

its a simple job just unsure because, well, ive never seen a set up like this and there is other odd wiring in the house.

That's not the right switch for that, but one of the black wires is the hot,the other two are high and low speeds. You can test them to find power and then touch each one to that wire to see which is high and which is low. I would recommend buying a switch that's made and labeled high-low.

it looks like a standard double pole switch, http://www.lowes.com/pd_246587-1571-690-WGCC6___?productId=3235900&pl=1&Ntt=double+light+switch. i do agree its not the right switch but the one there works well, its just the wrong color. the lay out on the new switch is slightly different different though.

i think the existing switch is the original from 69' when the house was built. on a side note this is a seriously powerful attic fan, on high it will actually create a vacuum in the house where you can feel the extra force needed to open the doors

Old switch is a single pole , 3 way combo. The switch in link is a double single pole. If you want to use the switch you bought, first have to find the hot wire, put that on the brass screw on whatever switch you want to have turn on the fan, then whatever color wire is the low speed put that on the black screw, which should have a tab to another black screw. Leave that tab on there, then take the last wire and put on brass screw left over. So basically it will be hot on bottom switch brass screw, when switch is on it feeds to double black which powers the top switch, then top switch gets turned on it goes to high speed. My only concern is if the motor will be affected by having low speed and high speed on at the same time. Maybe the motor guys can chime in

that sounds like its wired that way now actually. if low isnt on first you cant just turn it on high.

theres no black screw on the switch i have, all 4 our brass, however 2 are marked as hot

Can you take a picture of the other side of your existing switch for us?

It sounds like the other side of your existing switch may have a small bus bar
(or "tab" as as Mustand said) going between the two switches, similar to what receptacles
have between the top and bottom outlet. That may be why there is only one
black wire attached to only one side of each half of the switch.

I can only see what looks like the word "ON" on the top switch, so the bottom one must be a two way switch which gets its power from the upper switch via a bus bar on the other side.

theres no tab on the other side of the existing switch that i can see. both of the existing switched are marked on/off as well.

i dont beleive that the current switch is wired properly but it works and has for the life of the house

This would lead me to believe that the center "black" wire shown in your picture would be the power coming into the switch, and it feeds both the upper switch (black wire) and the lower switch (red wire).

The two switches may be connected internally with a bus bar seeing as there is a center screw with that center black wire on it.

Which switch makes the fan change speed from high to low?

the bottom switch is on/low the top switch is high. if you turn the bottom switch off, when the top switch is on (fan on high) it stays on high.

small update, managed to get in contact and set up an appointment with a local electrician. thanks all for the suggestions and attempts to help with the problems. im smart enough to know i dont have the knowledge to tackle this right now, with too many unlabeled wires and w/o access to the lines in the walls.

Great! You should have this sorted out in no time.

When the electrician is there, watch what he does, and take some pictures if you can to show what he did to make everything work!

Also, while he is there, if you have any other questions about your wiring, ask him. Even if it is just to ask how things work, or whatever. It's always good to know how things work just in the off chance that something happens and you have to call him back and tell him what is up. This way you will have a basic knowledge about what to say and ask.
