Just spend the little extra money and get SO. For something you use as much as a ratchet, $100 really isnt that much. Matco's 88tooth ratchets are nice too.

How much do you want to spend?

Armstrong, matco, snap on, beta, bahco and the craftsman premium ratchet are all good, in at over 60 dollar range.

If you want something less money in the sub 30 dollar range, kolbalt from lowes. 72t and a very smooth action.

Opps, missed the 3/8, corrected the prices

It's not 80+ teeth but the HF composite 3/8th is a 72 tooth ratchet that works very well and can take some abuse. Plus its under $10

I got my Armstrong for $40 bucks shipped. MRO center.com. Can find it for a bit more if you look around. If you don't like that one then I would look into used Matco 88 or an SO. Can find them on ebay for a decent price.

I started using the matco ratchets at the shop, and wanted something similar for home. I discovered the threads on here about putting matco guts into GearWrench ratchets without the quick release, so I bought one. I now own 7 of them, but haven't put matco parts in them yet because they're already so nice as is.

I've owned a Snap-On round head F749 ratchet since the late 80's.
I used it almost daily in a RR repair shop for 20 years, and held it up like a champ.
I still see used ones quite often on flea-bay, in the $30 dollar range.

Flf80. Best 3/8 ratchet I've ever used. Don't let people mislead you about the price it is well worth it. If anything I should have bought the soft handle version.

I don't own one yet, but Powerbuilt now has a Pear-Head ratchet that looks identical to the Duralast 36 tooth which is a clone from the snap on ratchet. The big difference is it is 72 tooth and the Duralast is 36 tooth. They are not in the powerbuilt catalog yet and have not seen them on the website, but I did look them over at Carquest. The 1/4 was around 16.99 and the 3/8 was 21.99. There COO is Taiwan.....
