Good First Impact Wrench?

I'm looking to buy a decent air gun because I'm sick of always borrowing other people's at the shop. I don't do heavy work with impacts, mainly just wheels. Everyone at the shop says IR would be the way to go. I've been looking around and the SK air gun doesn't look bad. Would it suit my needs just as well as a more expensive IR? Would one be easier to warranty than the other?

Thanks,

RD

Shop around to find the best deal on a genuine Ingersoll Rand 231. It's a great impact and not just as a first gun. Gererations of mechanics earned lots of money and kept America moving using the 231 long before Composite impacts or the Titanium Guns appeared.

I'll probably put someone's ******* in a twist, but for good _AND_ cheap, this thing ain't bad:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=2623

It's usually on-sale in the HF stores for significantly less. Were it priced closer to the IR231, I'd probably buy the IR231, from what people here have to say about it...

Of course, some folks here have the Earthquake, and had good things to say about it:

That is a classic gun; been around for ever and is a proven design! Killer deal @ national tool warehouse @ $105.99 and they include a free IRC-301 angle head die grinder (regular price is $48.56)! Check it out here!

Saw this post a few weeks back, got involved in looking over my project over Father's Day weekend, figured out that I need to go ahead and buy an impact gun. Thought I'd go check and see if it was still available. Sure enough, good deal still on. I'm PRETTY sure my compressor won't run the die grinder at the moment, or at least not for long, but it'll keep until I have one that will. Shipped and all, it was still only $115- not a bad price for an impact gun that will last me the rest of my natural life.

Thanks for posting the link.

My two tech friends own IR231 and most of time they got job done but something happen that IR231 won't loose the lug nuts on some vehicles which they has me to use my XT7100 (i paid 150 dollars from member on this site) and it got loose on few impact not like hard hammering... also i own IR2135ti and it is great but i just got tired of my shop's compressor that over regulator which break the plastic inside of trigger but only cost me 10 dollars to replace all intake parts... but i decided to bought XT7100 because it is thristy of air and my work has all air what it need so i dont have to worry about break anything... i am always keep lube all my air tools so it will last longer...

my opinion is IR231 are good impact wrench and it will not have any problems but if it is happen then use breaker bar... First year i was worked in independent shop that i did bought Rebuilt Mac tools AW434 as it are still tank since i has it but it are sitting in my toolboxes. it is great for hammering long... but i just love the XT7100... i just want few impact wrenches ready so i can have time to rebuild it other time so i dont have to be hurry...

IR231.

End of thread.

Or 2135. Costs more, but it's worth it.

I keep mine oiled and i'm careful, i never drop them or anything but they serve me well. They did 6 months in a tyre shop running about 400 nuts on/off a day and never skipped a beat. A bunch of my friends who work between a custom fabrication shop and a diesel maintenance workshop run them, in the diesel shop especially they take a lot of abuse, they work seamlessly.

i got chance to use friend's 2135. it was very nice and powerful. i have xt7100 its heavy but really good power. i liked 2135 more some reason. the ONLY thing i dont like is, no anvil stop like snap-on's. is SO only the company has anvil stop option?

Anvil stop? Does that mean the anvil stops spinning as soon as you lift off the trigger?

The 231 is a real good gun. And everyone says it'll only be used for taking off wheels and stuff. But once you've got a gun you use it for wheels only, then after a few jobs you wonder what else it's good for, then before you know it, you use it all the time. Which is why i said 2135.

IR231 shows up used if your patient for like $35. I haven't found one that cheap "yet" but its on my list of stuff to buy.

OTOH if I was just starting out buying tools I might start with a decent cordless impact gun. Its nice in a home setting not to have to fuss with the compressor just to take off a couple nuts.

There are different IR 231 models. 231C, 231G. Which are you referring to. I bought a 231G from Lowes a little while back and haven't used it yet. It doesn't have as classic a look as the 231C. Is it a good wrench?

I have not read the whole thread but will say IR231 as an excellent all-around choice.

Bulletproof and forgiving.

The Snap On just died yesterday

Now I guess I'll get a 231 again.

I know I will be thrashed..but, I work on things on the weekend and after work some weeknights. I am not a professional working with air tools all day, every day for a living. If so, buy the highest quality tools. I bought the HF 3/8 and 1/2 impacts for around $150.

The 3/8" is rated at 200 lbs-ft and the 1/2" is rated at 625. I have had them for about 1-1/2 years. No problems. I mainly use the little gun as it is light and will fit into tight spots. Get a 20% coupon and save a little more.

Just an option to get two guns and have a large one for really stuck nuts. Good luck on your search, you'll like whatever you get.
